Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Desert YardThe sun hung low over the arid horizon of New Mexico, casting long, bruised shadows across the cracked earth of Miller’s Crossing. For Lieutenant Colonel Ethan Knight, the uniform he wore felt heavy, but not for the reasons it usually did. For eight years, he had lived with a hollow space in his chest—a space carved out by the grief of losing his wife, Emily, and their newborn child on the exact same tragic day. At least, that was the lie his mother, Victoria Knight, had fed him with absolute, unyielding conviction. “Your wife didn’t survive the delivery,” she had told him years ago. “And neither did the baby.”
Ethan had swallowed the grief, burying himself in military strategy, deployments, and cold discipline. But today, standing outside a weathered adobe house surrounded by a rusted fence, the foundation of his entire life cracked wide open. In the dusty yard, a little boy was laughing, launching a paper airplane into the dry wind. When the boy turned around, Ethan's breath caught in his throat. The child had his eyes. The exact same stubborn cowlick. Even a small scar above his eyebrow that matched Ethan’s own childhood injury.

The boy froze, his smile vanishing as he locked eyes with Ethan’s military insignia. "Grandma!" the boy screamed in absolute terror. "They came again!" He bolted toward the house. Before Ethan could process the shock, an elderly woman with sharp, vengeful eyes stepped onto the porch. Rose Parker—Emily’s mother—sat in a wooden chair, her fingers tightly wrapped around a rosary. "So," she spat, her voice dripping with venom, "you finally decided to show up. Only eight years too late." Ethan’s voice trembled as he asked who the boy was. "Your son," Rose replied, “the son your mother claimed was dead.”
Before Ethan could recover, Grace, a former domestic worker from the Knight household who had vanished years ago, stumbled out of the adobe house. She collapsed onto her knees in the dirt, sobbing uncontrollably. "Forgive me, Colonel!" Grace cried out. "Your mother ordered me to make the baby disappear! Mrs. Knight said Emily was a poor country girl not worthy of your family. After Emily passed during childbirth, they told you everything perished. But he didn't. I secretly brought him here to Rose." The little boy, Oliver, clung to the doorway, whispering in fear, "Don't take me... My father is dead." Every medal on Ethan's chest suddenly felt like lead. But the nightmare deepened when Rose and Grace exchanged a look of pure dread. Grace choked out through her tears, "Colonel... Oliver wasn't the only baby. Emily gave birth to twins."
