Chapter 4 - The Internal Approval|

The silence that followed was suffocating.
Within seconds, Liam’s screaming subsided into soft sighs. Noah tucked his face into my neck, his exhausted little body relaxing against my chest. Grace, still in her crib, closed her eyes and drifted into a deep, spent sleep.

"A pest-control vendor logged entry into the nursery yesterday afternoon at three o'clock," Daniel said raspy. "The work order claimed it was a non-toxic electronic pest deterrent for attic rodents. It was authorized internally."
I looked at the digital signature at the bottom of the work order.
Printed in clear black letters was the name of the person who had granted full clearance:
ROSA MARTINEZ.
My blood went cold in my veins.
I looked up from the screen. Standing just five feet away in the doorway, holding her daughter’s hand, was Rosa.

She had just rushed up the stairs, looking breathless and concerned. "Ethan! I heard the babies stopped crying! Is everything alright?"
I stared at the woman Claire and I had trusted with our lives, feeling as though the floor beneath me had just caved in.
