Chapter 3 - The Blinking Green Light|

Every adult in the hallway froze.

Dr. Bennett turned around slowly. "What did you say, sweetie?"

"It’s the whistle," Emma repeated, clutching her plush rabbit tighter against her chest as her eyes filled with tears. "It’s hurting my ears. It’s making the babies cry."

Daniel stared at the little girl, then looked at me. "Ethan, I don't hear anything. Do you?"

"No," I replied, my mind racing. "Neither do the doctors."

"Children hear higher frequencies than adults," the neurologist chimed in suddenly, his eyes widening with horror. "Their auditory canals are far more sensitive to high-frequency acoustic waves. As we age, we lose the ability to hear upper-register ultrasonic ranges."

I stepped closer to Emma. "Emma, where is the whistle coming from? Can you show me?"

Emma slowly pointed a small, shaking finger upward, toward the carved mahogany molding running along the high ceiling above the babies' cribs.

"The little box behind the wooden rose," she whimpered.

Daniel didn't waste a second. He dragged a heavy wooden chair across the floor, climbed up, and inspected the decorative rosette carved into the corner molding. With a pocket tool, he pried the decorative wood panel away.

Hidden inside a carved hollow sat a small, sleek black plastic box. A tiny green LED light blinked rhythmically on its side.

"God in heaven," the neurologist gasped, stepping back. "It's an ultrasonic high-decibel emitter. It’s designed to emit invisible acoustic pressure waves at sixty kilohertz."

"What does that mean?!" I demanded, my hands clenching into fists.

"It means to an adult, it’s completely silent," the doctor explained, his voice shaking. "But to an infant, it’s the equivalent of standing next to a jet engine screaming directly into their ear drums. It causes excruciating pressure, vertigo, and unbearable physical agony."

Daniel reached up, grabbed the wiring, and violently ripped the device from the wall.

The green light flickered and died.
