Chapter 20 - The Unopened Envelope|

Six months later.

Spring had returned to Lake Forest. The estate grounds were filled with blooming white lilies, vibrant tulips, and the joyful sounds of three toddlers learning to take their very first steps across the green lawn.

The house was transformed. The gloomy, silent corridors were now filled with light, soft music, and the constant chatter of staff and family friends.

I sat in my study with the French doors thrown wide open to the breeze, working on a new philanthropic foundation established in Claire’s name to support pediatric healthcare initiatives across Chicago.

Daniel walked into the study, carrying the morning mail.

"Federal court wrapped up Victoria’s sentencing hearing this morning," Daniel said, setting a folder on my desk. "Twenty years without parole."

I nodded slowly, feeling no hatred, only a quiet sense of finality. "Good."

"There was one other thing in the secure mail slot," Daniel added, placing a thick, yellowed envelope on the desk. "It was sent from a private law firm in Zurich, Switzerland. It was held in escrow to be delivered to you on Noah, Liam, and Grace’s first birthday."

I frowned, looking at the heavy wax seal bearing Claire’s maiden initials.

My hands trembled slightly as I picked up the silver letter opener and broke the seal. Inside was a handwritten letter from Claire, penned just two weeks before she went into labor, along with a small, brass key.

I unfolded the letter, her elegant handwriting instantly bringing tears to my eyes.

Dearest Ethan,

If you are reading this, it means I am no longer there to hold your hand, and our sweet babies have turned one year old. I know how deeply you love us, and I know how hard you will fight to protect our children.

But Ethan, please remember that protection is not the same as living. Don't build a cage around your heart to keep out the pain.

The brass key included with this letter belongs to a safety deposit box in Geneva. Inside, you will find the original deeds to my family's ancestral home in Italy, along with something else—a secret my father kept from the world for thirty years regarding the true origin of the Callahan-Vance partnership.

There is another person out there, Ethan. Someone who shares our blood, someone who has been waiting in the shadows for the right moment to reach out to you...

I stopped reading, my pulse quickening as I looked down at the heavy brass key resting on the desk.

"Ethan?" Daniel asked, noticing the sudden change in my expression. "What is it?"

May you like

I looked out the window at my children playing in the garden, then back at the letter in my hand, feeling the chill of a brand-new mystery unfolding before me.

"Daniel," I whispered, holding up the brass key. "Pack our bags. We're going to Switzerland."
