Chapter 9 - The Handcuff VerdictSix months later, the criminal trial of United States v. Brandon Sterling concluded at the federal courthouse downtown.

The jury took less than thirty minutes to return a verdict: GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS.
On the morning of sentencing, Maria and Clara sat in the front row of the gallery, holding hands.
Judge Margaret Thomas delivered a scathing speech from the bench before pronouncing sentence.
âBrandon Sterling,â Judge Thomas declared, her voice echoing like thunder through the silent courtroom. âYour actions demonstrated a level of sociopathic greed and cold disregard for human life that is frankly appalling. You manipulated a motherâs love, stole a biological legacy, and put an innocent womanâs life in grave peril for money.â
She slammed her gavel down hard.
âI sentence you to thirty-five years in federal prison, without the possibility of parole.â
Brandon collapsed forward onto the defense table, crying uncontrollably as federal marshals pulled him up and led him away through the heavy steel side doors in chains.

Maria looked at the empty defense table, let out a long, peaceful breath, and squeezed her daughterâs hand tightly.
The nightmare was finally over.
