Chapter 2 - The Secret of the ClinicMaria covered her face with her hands, weeping softly as the monitor’s humming filled the tense room.

Clara turned to Dr. Parker, her voice shaking violently. “My mother didn't just go to some random offshore clinic, Doctor. Three years ago, my husband Brandon and I underwent four rounds of IVF at St. Jude’s Reproductive Center in Chicago. We had three viable embryos stored there.”

Dr. Parker’s eyebrows furrowed. “Are you saying...?”

“Six months ago, Brandon told me he filed for divorce,” Clara explained, her eyes filling with bitter tears. “He claimed he didn't want children anymore. But three months later, my mother vanished for two weeks. When she came back, she told me she was pregnant through a private donor.”

Clara stepped closer to Maria’s bed, taking her mother’s hands. “Mom... Brandon paid that private clinic in Mexico to steal my frozen embryo and implant it in you, didn't he? He told you I was in on it!”

Maria looked up, her face filled with absolute, horrifying realization.

“He... he told me you were too sick to carry,” Maria stammered, her voice cracking into a sob. “Brandon came to my house in tears, Clara! He said you desperately wanted a baby boy, but your doctors said your uterus couldn't handle another pregnancy. He said you both wanted me to be your surrogate as a surprise!”

Dr. Parker exchanged a look of pure shock with the head nurse.

Brandon had manipulated an aging, grieving grandmother, deceiving her into becoming an unwitting surrogate for a stolen embryo, all while divorcing Clara to claim full legal rights over the child once born!

“He was setting up a custody trap,” Dr. Parker realized, his voice dropping into a cold register. “If Maria carried the child to term, Brandon would use the private contract he signed with the offshore clinic to claim sole legal custody of his biological son, completely cutting Clara out!”

Suddenly, Maria let out a sharp gasp of pain, clutching her abdomen as her face turned deathly pale.

The blood pressure monitor began chiming hysterically.

“She’s in hypovolemic shock!” Dr. Parker bellowed, hitting the emergency code button on the wall. “Internal hemorrhage! Prep OR 2 for an emergency laparotomy right now!”
