Chapter 6 - The Foreign LaboratoryThree weeks later.

Maria was discharged from St. Judeâs Hospital, fully recovered and resting comfortably at Claraâs quiet suburban home.
Meanwhile, the federal investigation into Brandon Sterlingâs crimes expanded into an international scandal.
In Mexico City, federal authorities raided the private clinicâClinica Esperanzaâwhere the stolen embryo had been implanted. Computers were seized, servers mirrored, and three doctors were taken into custody.
In Victoria Vanceâs law office downtown, Clara and Maria sat across from Prosecutor Sarah Jenkins, reviewing the seized evidence.
âItâs even worse than we anticipated,â Prosecutor Jenkins revealed, laying out a series of translated emails on the table. âBrandon paid the lead physician at Clinica Esperanza fifty thousand dollars in cash to bypass standard medical screening for Maria.â
Maria covered her mouth in horror. âThey knew... they knew a woman my age couldn't safely carry an abdominal pregnancy?â
âThey knew the pregnancy carried an eighty-percent mortality risk for you, Mrs. Collins,â Jenkins stated gravely. âBrandon didn't care whether you survived the delivery. In fact, his emails reveal he was counting on your death during childbirth to prevent you from ever testifying about how you received the embryo.â

Clara gasped, tears of pure rage filling her eyes as she wrapped her arm around her mother. âHe was trying to kill my mother...â
âItâs attempted criminally negligent homicide,â Jenkins nodded. âAnd with the forged trust documents we recovered from his office, Brandon is facing up to forty years in federal prison.â
