Chapter 6 — The Sin That Started It All

My husband didn't deny it.
Not when the oldest man called him by his real family name.
Not when he looked at me with eyes full of hatred instead of fear.
Instead...
He laughed.
A slow...
Bitter laugh.
"So..."
"You finally told her."
The oldest brother stepped forward.
"No."
"We're about to tell her the truth."
I looked from one face to another.
"What truth?"
No one answered immediately.
Then my oldest brother pulled an old, yellowed photograph from his coat.
In it stood a beautiful young woman holding the hand of a smiling man.
The woman looked astonishingly like my husband.
The man...
Looked exactly like my father when he was young.
My hands began to shake.
"I don't understand..."
My brother's voice became painfully quiet.
"That woman..."
"Was your husband's mother."
The room fell silent.
I stared at him, unable to breathe.
"Your father loved her."
"But she never loved him."
"She was already engaged to another man."
My husband slowly clenched his fists.
His jaw tightened.
The oldest brother continued.
"Your father wasn't used to hearing the word 'no.'"
"He used his family's political power and money."
"He hired gangsters..."
"...to kidnap her."
Every word struck like a hammer.
"No..."
I whispered.
"That's impossible..."
"It isn't."
"The man she truly loved—your husband's father—tried to save her."
"He fought them alone."
"They beat him so badly..."
"...he died before the ambulance arrived."
I covered my mouth.
My vision blurred with tears.
"No..."
"And when his wife saw his body..."
My brother lowered his head.
"She couldn't survive the shock."
"She took her own life that same night."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
My husband finally looked at me.
His eyes were red—not with grief...
But with decades of hatred.
"You thought I married you because I loved you?"
He gave a hollow smile.
"My parents died because of your father."
"I spent twenty-five years waiting."
"Waiting until I could destroy everything your family built."
His voice cracked for the first time.
"I wasn't stealing your money, Emily."
"I was collecting a debt."
Every memory of our marriage shattered inside me.
I hadn't married a monster born from greed.
I had married a man who had devoted his entire life to revenge.
But before anyone could speak again...
The oldest brother suddenly stared at the old photograph.
His expression changed.
His face turned deathly pale.
"Wait..."
He whispered.
"This can't be right."
He flipped the photograph over.
A single handwritten sentence covered the back.
"If Emily ever learns the truth... tell her who her real father is."
The room froze.
May you like
I slowly looked toward the staircase...
Where my father had just appeared.
