Chapter 2 — The Man I Married Never Existed

I pressed both hands over my mouth to stop myself from gasping.

The room suddenly felt too small.

Too hot.

Too silent.

A man's voice crackled through the speaker.

"So... what about her?"

My husband laughed.

Not the gentle laugh I'd fallen in love with.

A cold...

Empty laugh.

"Once the honeymoon is over..."

"I'll get rid of her."

The words echoed inside my skull.

Get rid of her.

He wasn't angry.

He wasn't joking.

He sounded like a businessman discussing tomorrow's schedule.

I stared at the polished floor inches from my eyes.

Every memory I'd treasured suddenly became poisoned.

The surprise proposal.

The handwritten love letters.

The tears in his eyes during our vows.

Every single one...

Had been part of a performance.

I wasn't his wife.

I was an investment.

Then he said something that shattered me even more.

"She never questioned why I insisted on a prenup amendment this morning."

My heart stopped.

The documents I'd signed before the ceremony...

I'd barely read them.

He had kissed my forehead and told me,

"Just routine legal paperwork."

May you like

I had trusted him.

Completely.
