Chapter 3 — The Sound That Changed Everything
My entire body was shaking.
I tried to stay perfectly still.
Just wait...
He'd leave.
I'd run.
I'd call the police.
I'd survive.
Then my elbow slipped.
THUD.
The sound exploded through the silent room.
My heart stopped.
The conversation ended instantly.
Silence.
No breathing.
No movement.
Then...
Very slowly...
His polished shoes turned toward the side of the bed.
One step.
Another.
He crouched.
I saw one hand touch the hardwood floor.
Then another.
The mattress dipped above me.
He wasn't searching randomly.
He already knew.
His face slowly lowered upside down over the edge.
His smile disappeared.
His eyes became frighteningly calm.
"Emily..."
