Chapter 4 — The Hunt Begins

Adrenaline exploded through my body.
I kicked the gift box into his face and crawled out the opposite side of the bed.
He shouted.
I ran barefoot across the polished floor.
The bedroom door—
Locked.
My stomach dropped.
Of course.
He always locked the bedroom from the inside at night.
He had planned this room.
Planned everything.
Behind me, I heard slow footsteps.
Not running.
Walking.
Calm.
Confident.
Like a hunter following wounded prey.
"You don't need to make this difficult," he said softly.
"We're still husband and wife."
I grabbed the crystal vase from the dresser and threw it.
Glass shattered.
He barely flinched.
Then his phone rang again.
He glanced at the screen.
Smiled.
"They're here."
My blood turned to ice.
