Chapter 8 - THE GRANDMOTHER'S OFFER|

Eleanor Thorne received Marcus in the library of her estate. She wore a cream silk blouse and a string of pearls, and she sat behind a polished desk as though she were presiding over a board meeting.

"You look upset," she observed.

"You arranged surveillance on Elena."

"I arranged protection."

"You paid a contractor who abandoned his post while Saraphina attacked her."

Eleanor's expression barely changed.

"Then the contractor failed."

"You forged a transfer order."

"I did not forge anything."

"Your letter says the baby must remain under supervision until birth."

"That is a reasonable precaution."

Marcus placed the letter on her desk.

"You wrote that the child should activate the succession plan."

Eleanor folded her hands.

"Your grandson will inherit a substantial stake in Thorn Global. Someone must ensure that inheritance is protected."

"From whom?"

"From people who don't belong in this family."

Marcus stared at her.

"Elena is my daughter-in-law."

"Elena is an outsider who married into a dynasty she doesn't understand."

"She understands loyalty better than any of us."

Eleanor's eyes sharpened.

"Don't become sentimental. Sentiment has ruined stronger men than you."

Marcus stood.

"Did you know Saraphina planned to enter Elena's room?"

"I knew she wanted a conversation."

"Did you authorize the security guard to leave?"

Eleanor did not answer immediately.

That hesitation was enough.

Marcus felt cold anger settle inside him.

"You allowed a pregnant woman to be placed in danger because you wanted leverage over my son."

"I wanted Julian to remember his responsibilities."

"Your responsibilities include protecting your family, not terrorizing it."

Eleanor's voice hardened.

"I built this family. I protected the company when your father nearly destroyed it. I sacrificed my own happiness to ensure the Thorne name survived. You have no idea what I did to keep this empire intact."

"Then tell me."

For the first time, Eleanor looked frightened.

She opened a drawer and removed a thin folder.

Inside were medical records belonging to Catherine, along with a copy of the original trust. A second birth certificate showed that Catherine had given birth to a daughter years before Julian.

The child's name was Elena Vance.

Marcus could not speak.

Eleanor explained that Catherine had been seventeen when she became pregnant. Her family had sent her away, and the baby had been adopted privately by a couple who later raised Elena as their own. Catherine had never stopped searching for her daughter, but she had been pressured to keep the adoption secret.

"Why?" Marcus asked.

"Because the family believed a child born before marriage would damage Catherine's future."

"You let her believe her daughter was lost."

"I believed the adoption was permanent."

"And when Elena married Julian?"

"I recognized her. I suspected who she was, but I needed proof."

Marcus's hands shook.

"Is Elena Julian's sister?"

"No," Eleanor said quickly. "Catherine was not Julian's biological mother. Julian's mother was my daughter-in-law, Margaret, who died shortly after his birth. Catherine raised him as her own after Margaret's death."

Marcus stared at her, confused.

Eleanor continued, revealing that the family had concealed the arrangement to protect Julian's legitimacy and the foundation's control. Catherine had been Elena's biological mother, while Margaret was Julian's biological mother. They had kept the truth buried for decades.

"Then why did you tell Julian that Catherine's instructions concerned Elena?" Marcus asked.

"Because Catherine wanted her daughter to inherit a portion of the foundation. Julian would gain control of the voting shares when his child was born. I intended to ensure that neither inheritance could be used against me."

Marcus stepped away from the desk.

"You used my son, your great-grandchild, and Elena to maintain control."

"I did what was necessary."

"No," Marcus said. "You did what was convenient."

He left with the records and immediately called his attorney.

But as he reached his car, his phone rang.

It was Dr. Reed.

"Mr. Thorne, Elena is in labor."
