Chapter 3 - THE BILLIONAIRE'S SECRET FILE|

Elena woke beneath bright hospital lights with a dry mouth and a dull ache across her abdomen.
For several seconds, she did not remember why she had been moved. Then she heard the monitor and felt the baby shift beneath her hand.
"Leo," she whispered.
Nurse Patricia appeared beside the bed.
"He's still with us, sweetheart. The doctors are monitoring both of you closely."
Elena began to cry.
"Is he hurt?"
"We don't have evidence of a direct injury, but your blood pressure rose dangerously. Dr. Reed wants to keep you here while we stabilize it."
"Can I see my husband?"
Patricia hesitated.
That hesitation answered more than words could have.
Elena turned toward the window.
"Tell him I need some time."
Patricia nodded and adjusted the blanket.
When she left, Elena noticed Marcus sitting in the corner. He had removed his jacket and rolled up his sleeves. A folder rested on his knees.
"I didn't know you were here," Elena said.
"I didn't want to wake you."
She studied him carefully. Their relationship had always been polite but distant. Marcus had never been cruel to her, yet he had rarely shown affection. He treated family gatherings like board meetings and spoke more comfortably about company acquisitions than feelings.
Now he looked genuinely worried.
"How long have you been sitting there?"
"Long enough to realize the hospital coffee is a crime against humanity."
Elena almost smiled.
Then she remembered Saraphina.
"Did the police arrest her?"
"She is being questioned. The hospital has preserved the security footage, and the guard who abandoned his post has been identified."
"And Julian?"
Marcus lowered his eyes.
"He has been questioned too."
Elena closed her eyes.
"Did he know?"
"I don't have the complete answer yet."
"Do you believe he knew?"
Marcus took a slow breath.
"I believe my son has spent too many years confusing secrecy with control. I will not insult you by pretending that makes him innocent."
Elena looked at the folder on his knees.
"What is that?"
"Records from the family office. I asked our attorneys to review every financial document involving Julian, Saraphina, and your medical care."
"Why would my medical care be in his business records?"
Marcus opened the folder.
"Because six weeks ago, Julian established a private trust in your name. The trust includes enough money to cover your medical expenses, your son's future education, and your living expenses if something happened to Julian."
Elena frowned.
"That sounds like something a husband should tell his wife."
"Yes. It does."
"Why didn't he?"
Marcus did not answer.
He handed her a copy of the trust agreement. Elena read slowly, stopping at the beneficiary section.
Her name was listed as the primary beneficiary. Leo was listed as the secondary beneficiary. But a handwritten amendment had been attached to the back, dated three days before her hospital admission.
It transferred a portion of the assets to an account managed by a company she had never heard of.
"Who is Northstar Advisory?" she asked.
Marcus's expression changed.
"An investment company associated with a former Thorn Global executive. He left the company after an internal investigation."
"Was Julian involved?"
"I don't know yet."
Elena looked at him.
"Mr. Thorne, I don't want your money. I don't want your company. I wanted my husband to sit beside me when I was afraid."
Marcus's face softened.
"I know."
"No. I don't think anyone in your family knows what it feels like to be frightened and surrounded by people who can buy anything except honesty."
He accepted the rebuke without protest.
"I cannot undo what my son has done. But I can make sure nobody uses your illness to take away your choices."
A doctor entered to check Elena's blood pressure. Marcus stepped aside while Patricia reviewed the readings.
When the examination was finished, Elena noticed a sealed envelope tucked beneath the trust agreement.
It had her name written on it in Julian's handwriting.
She opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Elena, if you're reading this, I failed to keep my promise. I need you to know that I changed the trust because I learned something about the baby. Something I was afraid to tell you.
May you like
Beneath the sentence was a line that made Elena's stomach tighten.
THE DOCTOR WHO SIGNED YOUR FIRST PREGNANCY REPORT WAS PAID BY SOMEONE IN MY FAMILY.
