Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN WHO WALKED INTO THE HOSPITAL|

The metal IV pole rattled when Saraphina Dubois grabbed it.

Elena Vance Thorne tried to sit up, but a sharp pain tightened across her abdomen. Her heart raced. The monitor beside her bed began beeping faster, and the small green line representing her baby's heartbeat jumped across the screen.

"Put that down," Elena whispered. "Please. My baby could die."

Saraphina tilted her head, studying Elena with the cold curiosity of someone examining a possession she intended to destroy.

"Your baby?" she asked. "You still think Julian wants that child?"

Elena reached for the call button again.

Saraphina slapped her hand away.

"I said nobody is coming."

The woman had entered through the private elevator after paying a temporary security contractor to leave his post. She had expected Elena to be unconscious or too frightened to resist. She had not expected the pregnant woman to stare back at her with such desperate determination.

"You don't belong here," Elena said.

"Neither do you."

Saraphina seized the IV pole and pulled it sideways. The tubing tightened against Elena's wrist. Elena cried out, protecting her stomach with both arms.

"Stop!" she gasped. "Please!"

For one terrible second, Saraphina seemed ready to strike her. Instead, she leaned close enough for Elena to smell her expensive perfume.

"Julian promised me a future before he ever promised you one. You were supposed to be temporary."

"I never asked him to choose me."

"No. You simply got pregnant."

Saraphina's eyes dropped toward Elena's stomach.

Then she reached toward the monitor cable.

Before she could touch it, the door burst open.

Nurse Patricia hurried inside, followed by a hospital security officer. Patricia took one look at the displaced IV pole and Elena's pale face.

"Get away from my patient!"

Saraphina stepped back, instantly transforming her expression into one of offended disbelief.

"This woman attacked me," she declared. "I came to discuss a personal matter, and she became hysterical."

Elena tried to speak, but pain stole her breath. Patricia pressed the emergency call button and shouted for the obstetric team.

"Mrs. Thorne, look at me. Stay with me."

"My baby," Elena whispered.

"We're checking him right now."

The security officer restrained Saraphina. She fought him, screaming that her name was important, that she knew the hospital board, that everyone would regret humiliating her.

Then the elevator doors opened again.

Marcus Thorne stepped into the corridor.

At sixty-three, Julian's billionaire father had the imposing calm of a man who rarely needed to raise his voice. His tailored navy suit was immaculate, but his expression changed when he saw medical staff rushing into Elena's room.

"What happened?"

Nobody answered quickly enough.

Marcus entered the suite and saw Elena gripping Patricia's hand, tears slipping down her cheeks as a doctor checked the fetal monitor.

He noticed the twisted IV tubing, the overturned chair, and the security officer holding Saraphina near the door.

For a moment, Marcus said nothing.

Then he looked at the woman.

"Why are you in my daughter-in-law's room?"

Saraphina straightened.

"Mr. Thorne, this is a misunderstanding. Julian and I—"

"Where is my son?"

She hesitated.

"At the office."

Marcus turned toward the guard.

"Call the police. Preserve the elevator footage, the corridor cameras, and every security access record from the last twelve hours. Nobody deletes anything."

Saraphina's confidence faltered.

"You can't do this to me."

Marcus stepped closer.

"I haven't done anything to you yet."

Behind him, Dr. Evelyn Reed emerged from Elena's bedside.

"Mr. Thorne, we need to move her to intensive monitoring. Her blood pressure is dangerously elevated, and we're concerned about the baby's condition."

Marcus's face tightened.

"Will they survive?"

"We're doing everything we can."

He watched as the nurses prepared Elena for transfer. She reached toward him, her fingers trembling.

"Please," she whispered. "Don't let him take my baby away from me."

Marcus caught her hand.

"No one is taking your baby."

Then Elena looked directly into his eyes.

"Your son knew she was coming."

Marcus went completely still.

Across the corridor, Saraphina stopped struggling.

And for the first time, the billionaire looked not at the intruder, but at the son who had just arrived at the end of the hall.

Julian Thorne was breathing hard. His tie was loose, his phone clutched in one hand.

He looked at Elena.

Then at Saraphina.

His face revealed something he could not hide.

He recognized the look of a man whose secret had finally found him.
