Chapter 16 - THE WIFE WHO CHOSE HERSELF|

Elena was discharged from the hospital three weeks later. Leo remained in the neonatal unit for observation, but the doctors expected him to go home soon.
Marcus arranged a private residence near the hospital, staffed by a nurse and equipped for Elena's recovery. She accepted the medical support but refused to let the family office control her schedule, finances, or visitors.
Her independent attorney prepared a legal separation agreement.
Julian received the document at his apartment.
He read it in silence, then called Elena.
"I understand why you're doing this," he said.
"Do you?"
"You don't trust me."
"Trust is not the only problem. You made decisions about my body, my money, and our child without asking me. You allowed a woman you were involved with to remain in our lives, then hid the truth because you thought you could manage the consequences."
Julian closed his eyes.
"I know."
"You don't get to decide that your remorse is enough."
"I won't ask you to."
She paused.
"I want joint legal arrangements for Leo only if they protect him. I want financial transparency. I want you to attend counseling and complete the legal obligations connected to the investigation. I will not agree to private deals that hide what happened."
"I agree."
"And I want you to understand that agreeing doesn't mean we're getting back together."
"I understand."
For once, Julian did not try to persuade her.
He signed the preliminary separation agreement and returned it through the attorneys.
Marcus supported Elena's decision, even though he hoped his son might eventually rebuild the marriage. He understood that pressuring her would repeat the same mistake that had brought them to this point.
As Leo grew stronger, Elena visited him every day. She learned how to hold him without disturbing his monitors, how to recognize his tiny cries, and how to remain calm when the nurses adjusted his feeding schedule.
One afternoon, Julian arrived for a supervised visit.
He washed his hands, followed the nurse's instructions, and held Leo carefully against his chest.
The baby opened his eyes.
Julian smiled through tears.
"Hi, little man. I'm your dad."
Elena watched from a chair.
She wanted Leo to have a relationship with his father, but she would not sacrifice her own safety to create the appearance of a perfect family.
When Julian returned the baby to the nurse, he turned toward Elena.
"Thank you for letting me see him."
"This is his right, not a favor to you."
"I know."
He looked at her for a long moment.
"I've started therapy. I've also given the prosecutor every record I have, including the messages I sent Saraphina. I won't hide anything else."
Elena nodded.
"That's what you should have done from the beginning."
"I know."
He left without asking for another chance.
A week later, Leo was finally cleared to go home. Marcus stood beside Elena as the nurse placed the baby in his carrier. For a moment, all three adults were silent.
Then Marcus smiled.
"He's going to have a strong mother."
Elena looked at her son.
"He's going to have a mother who tells him the truth."
When she arrived at the residence, she discovered that the nursery had been prepared exactly as she had requested. There were no expensive decorations or designer furniture, only soft blankets, a comfortable chair, and a small bookshelf.
Marcus had arranged for the room to be furnished, but Elena had chosen every detail.
She placed Leo in his crib and watched him sleep.
For the first time in months, the future felt like something she could shape rather than something she had to survive.
Then the doorbell rang.
A courier stood outside with a package from the court.
Inside was a certified copy of Catherine's original will, restored to its legal status after the disputed transfer was overturned.
A note from the prosecutor accompanied it.
THE TRUST IS YOURS. BUT THE COURT HAS FOUND A SECOND BENEFICIARY WHO WAS NEVER DISCLOSED.
Elena read the attached page.
The second beneficiary was not Julian.
May you like
It was a child named Daniel Vance, born four years before Elena.
She had never heard of him.
