Chapter 8 - THE RECORDING THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING|

By evening, Rosa had secured the chapel and recovered the documents Lorenzo and Abigail had managed to remove. The original will was intact, and the handwritten note had been photographed and stored in several secure locations.

But the memory card was gone.

Someone had entered the archive before them, taken the recording, and left the rest of the evidence untouched.

That meant the intruder had known precisely what mattered.

Rosa gathered the estate's trusted staff in the security office. She explained that an internal investigation was underway and asked anyone with information to come forward. No threats were made, and no one was accused without evidence.

When the meeting ended, a young maintenance worker named Daniel Price remained behind.

“I saw a vehicle near the chapel last night,” he said.

Rosa looked up.

“What kind?”

“A black SUV. I thought it belonged to Mr. Matteo, but I couldn't see the driver.”

“Did you report it?”

“I told the night supervisor. He said not to worry about it.”

“Who was the supervisor?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Mr. Cole. Vanessa's personal security coordinator.”

Rosa wrote down the name.

It was a lead, not a conclusion.

Meanwhile, Lorenzo's independent neurological appointment took place at a hospital outside the family's usual network. Abigail accompanied him with his permission, and an independent specialist reviewed his medical history, assessed his cognitive functioning, and evaluated his rehabilitation needs.

The findings were clear: Lorenzo demonstrated the capacity to understand and make his own medical and financial decisions. His physical disability required ongoing care, but it did not establish cognitive incapacity.

The specialist also recommended further investigation into the unexplained injuries documented in the nursing notes.

Lorenzo listened to the findings in silence.

When the appointment ended, he looked at Abigail.

“For three years, I let people tell me what I could and couldn't do.”

“You were recovering from a traumatic injury. You deserved support, not manipulation.”

“What if I had believed them forever?”

“Then someone should have kept asking questions.”

He took her hand.

“I'm glad you did.”

That evening, Rosa received an encrypted message from an unknown sender. It contained a short audio file recovered from a backup device connected to the estate's old security system.

She played it in the security office.

At first, there was only static.

Then came Vanessa's voice.

“Once the assessment is signed, he won't be able to challenge anything.”

A second voice answered.

Matteo.

“And the original will?”

“Claire said it was destroyed.”

“She lied.”

A pause followed.

Then Vanessa spoke again.

“If Lorenzo finds it, the entire arrangement collapses.”

Matteo's reply was quiet.

“Then make sure he never finds it.”

The recording ended.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Rosa immediately preserved the file and contacted the attorney handling the investigation. The recording required authentication, but it provided a significant new lead.

Lorenzo listened to it twice.

“She was planning this before the accident,” he said.

“We don't know that yet,” Rosa replied. “The recording proves they discussed taking control of your affairs. It doesn't establish when the plan began or who caused the crash.”

“Then we'll find out.”

Abigail watched him carefully. The old anger was returning, but this time it had direction.

Later, she found him in the conservatory.

“Are you thinking about revenge?”

“I'm thinking about consequences.”

“Those are not always the same thing.”

He looked at her.

“I spent years believing that if someone hurt me, I had to hurt them worse. Otherwise, they would do it again.”

“And now?”

“Now I want them stopped. I want the truth documented. I want the people they used protected.”

Abigail smiled faintly.

“That sounds like a better plan.”

He reached for her hand.

“I want you beside me when this is over.”

“You have me beside you now.”

“No. I mean when there is no investigation, no threat, and no reason for you to stay.”

She understood what he was asking.

“I can't promise you a future before we've survived the present.”

“I wouldn't ask you to.”

They kissed softly.

For the first time, Lorenzo imagined a life beyond the estate's walls.

Then his phone rang.

The caller was the attorney examining the recovered audio.

“Mr. Moretti,” he said urgently, “we found something in the metadata. The recording was created on the night of your accident.”

Lorenzo sat upright.

“What else?”

May you like

The attorney hesitated.

“The second voice isn't Matteo's.”
