Chapter 16 - THE FIANCÉE'S FINAL GAME|

Vanessa denied the accusation immediately.

Through her attorney, she claimed Victor Cole had fabricated the story to protect himself from financial misconduct. She described the disputed photographs as misleading and insisted that her relationship with Lorenzo had been loving until his injury made their lives difficult.

Lorenzo read the statement without reacting.

“She is very good at making cruelty sound like sacrifice,” he said.

Abigail sat beside him.

“Then we let the evidence speak.”

Victor Cole's account was examined carefully. Investigators reviewed his employment records, communications, and financial transactions. His testimony was not accepted as proof by itself, especially because he had his own reasons to minimize his role.

But he provided information about a repair shop that had serviced Lorenzo's vehicle before the accident.

The shop's former mechanic confirmed that someone had requested an unusual inspection shortly before the crash. He had not performed the work, but he remembered the customer because she insisted on paying in cash.

He identified Vanessa from a photograph.

The mechanic also remembered a second person waiting outside the garage.

Matteo.

The new testimony supported the theory that both siblings had been involved in preparations surrounding the vehicle, but investigators still needed to establish exactly what each person had done.

Jonathan emphasized the importance of avoiding public accusations that went beyond the evidence.

Lorenzo agreed.

“I want a case that tells the truth, not one that gives me permission to hate them.”

Meanwhile, Vanessa attempted to contact Abigail directly.

She sent a message inviting the nurse to meet at a downtown restaurant. Abigail declined and forwarded the communication to Jonathan.

Vanessa then sent a second message.

You think Lorenzo loves you? He loves that you make him feel helpless less often. When he gets his power back, you will become another employee he forgets.

Abigail deleted nothing.

She preserved the message as evidence of continued unwanted contact.

Lorenzo wanted to respond, but Abigail stopped him.

“Do not give her another opportunity to make this about us.”

He nodded.

Instead, they focused on the investigation and Lorenzo's rehabilitation. He began working with a specialist to improve his transfer technique, upper-body strength, and independence with daily activities.

Progress was slow. Some days, pain interrupted the sessions. Other days, fatigue forced him to stop early.

He learned to accept those setbacks without interpreting them as personal failures.

Abigail remained his nurse, but their relationship changed gradually. They discussed boundaries openly, arranged for independent clinical oversight, and ensured that his care decisions were never tied to his romantic feelings.

One evening, Lorenzo invited her to dinner at a small restaurant near the lake.

There were no bodyguards at the table, no business associates, and no discussion of the investigation for the first thirty minutes.

He told her about a childhood dream of traveling across Italy with his mother. She described the small apartment she hoped to buy for Margaret someday.

“What would you do if money were no longer a problem?” he asked.

“Finish my advanced nursing certification. Take my mother to the ocean. Sleep for twelve hours.”

He laughed.

“In that order?”

“Possibly.”

He reached across the table.

“I want to help you achieve those things.”

“You can support me. You cannot purchase them for me.”

“I know.”

“And you cannot make me your nurse forever just because you're afraid I might leave.”

His expression grew serious.

“I don't want you to stay because you feel obligated. I want you to stay because you want a life with me.”

Abigail looked at him.

“I want to find out what that life could be.”

They kissed beneath the restaurant's soft lights.

For the first time, the future seemed like something they might choose rather than something they had to survive.

Then Jonathan called.

The investigators had recovered a deleted message from Vanessa's phone through a lawful forensic examination.

It had been sent to Matteo on the night before the accident.

The brakes are handled. After tomorrow, Lorenzo will never control the company again.

The message had not yet been fully authenticated in court, but its context was alarming.

And the reply from Matteo contained only four words.

Make sure he survives.
