Chapter 19 - THE WOMAN WHO STOOD BETWEEN THEM|

Lorenzo read his father's letter three times.

Rosa had been with the Moretti family for more than a decade. She had protected the estate, managed security, and stood beside Lorenzo through his accident and the years of rehabilitation that followed.

If she had betrayed his father, then every moment of trust between them had been built on a lie.

Abigail watched him carefully.

“We need to ask her.”

Lorenzo nodded.

Rosa entered the study ten minutes later. When she saw the letter in his hand, she stopped.

“I wondered when you would find that.”

Lorenzo's face became cold.

“You knew it was here?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because your father asked me to wait until you were ready to understand what he was trying to protect.”

Lorenzo placed the letter on the desk.

“Explain.”

Rosa sat down.

She revealed that Alessandro had discovered financial irregularities in Northstar Maritime months before his death. He had suspected Matteo was involved but did not know how far the scheme extended.

Alessandro had asked Rosa to preserve copies of certain records and keep them away from the family lawyers until an independent investigation could begin.

Rosa agreed.

But after Alessandro died, she discovered that several of the documents had disappeared. She suspected someone inside the estate was watching her, so she moved the remaining files to the chapel archive.

“Why didn't you tell me?” Lorenzo demanded.

“Because you were recovering from a traumatic injury, and every person around you was trying to control your decisions. I believed that revealing the financial investigation would put you in greater danger.”

“You decided what I could handle.”

“Yes.”

The admission hurt more than a denial.

Rosa continued.

“I made mistakes. I should have told you enough to let you choose. But I never helped Vanessa or Matteo take control of your affairs. I never participated in the accident.”

“Then why did my father name you in the letter?”

“Because he knew I had agreed to protect the records. He feared that if the family discovered the archive, they would accuse me of hiding assets or manipulating the will.”

Lorenzo studied her face.

“Can you prove it?”

Rosa opened a small case and placed a memory device on the desk.

“I kept a copy of the original security log from the night of your accident. It shows who entered the garage and when. I didn't release it earlier because I wanted to verify that it hadn't been altered.”

Jonathan examined the device and arranged for a forensic specialist to authenticate its contents.

The recovered logs showed that Vanessa had entered the garage shortly before the vehicle was moved. Victor Cole had accompanied her. Matteo arrived later, remained for several minutes, and left before the car was driven away.

The records supported the accounts already gathered, although investigators continued examining whether any additional person had participated.

Rosa also produced correspondence from Alessandro instructing her to preserve evidence of financial misconduct. The letters supported her explanation that she had been acting to protect the archive, not conceal wrongdoing.

Lorenzo listened in silence.

Finally, he said, “I believe you.”

Rosa lowered her head.

“I don't expect forgiveness for keeping you in the dark.”

“You were trying to protect me. But you don't get to make every decision for me again.”

“I understand.”

He extended his hand.

Their reconciliation was quiet, without speeches or promises that everything could return to the way it had been.

It could not.

But trust, Lorenzo realized, did not require pretending that mistakes had never happened. It required people to acknowledge them and accept the consequences.

That evening, Jonathan informed them that the evidence was sufficient for investigators to seek formal action regarding the suspected fraud, falsified medical documentation, and vehicle tampering. The legal process would take time, and no one could promise a particular outcome.

Lorenzo accepted that.

He no longer needed every question answered immediately.

At home, Abigail found him in the garden beneath the old cypress trees.

“I have something to ask you,” he said.

She sat beside him.

“Go ahead.”

“When this is over, I want to build a life with you. Not because you saved me. Not because I owe you. Because you have shown me what love looks like when it doesn't demand obedience.”

Abigail's eyes filled with tears.

“I love you, Lorenzo. But I need a life of my own, too.”

“I want that for you.”

“I want to finish my training, help my mother, and work somewhere that lets me care for people without being owned by anyone.”

“Then that is the life we will build.”

She kissed him.

For the first time, the promise felt real.

Then Jonathan called with the final development.

Vanessa had agreed to cooperate with investigators.

She claimed she could prove that Matteo had been responsible for the accident.

But she had one condition.

May you like

She would only give her evidence directly to Lorenzo.

And she insisted that he come alone.
