Chapter 12 - THE GALA THAT BECAME A TRIAL|

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Claire stood beside Jonathan Reed, holding the document while photographers crowded toward the stage. Senator Vale maintained his public composure, but Lorenzo noticed that he had stopped looking at the cameras.

“Ms. Donovan,” Vale said, “you have made a serious accusation.”

“I know.”

“Do you understand the consequences of presenting a forged document?”

“Yes. That's why I brought it to an attorney before bringing it here.”

Jonathan stepped forward.

“No conclusion has been reached regarding the document's authenticity. It has been submitted for independent examination. We are asking that all relevant records be preserved.”

Vale nodded as if he welcomed the process.

“Then I have nothing to fear.”

Vanessa moved toward the exit.

Rosa noticed and discreetly asked hotel security to preserve the relevant camera footage and prevent anyone from interfering with the investigators. No one was detained merely for attempting to leave, and the event's organizers were advised to contact the appropriate authorities.

Lorenzo watched Vanessa disappear into the corridor.

He wanted to follow her.

Abigail touched his arm.

“Don't.”

“She knows something.”

“Then let the evidence bring it out. If you chase her now, she will turn this into a story about your anger instead of her actions.”

He exhaled slowly.

“You're right.”

It was not easy for him to admit. But he had promised himself that he would no longer allow rage to make decisions on his behalf.

The gala continued in a strained atmosphere. Several trustees postponed the planned vote until the legal questions could be reviewed. Lorenzo accepted the delay, insisting that the foundation's charitable work must not become collateral damage in the family dispute.

Later that night, Jonathan received a message from an independent forensic specialist. The signature on the disputed letter could not yet be authenticated, but the document's paper and printing characteristics were consistent with materials used in Vale's office several years earlier.

It was a lead, not proof.

The investigators would need original files and corroborating testimony.

Claire also provided access to her storage unit. Inside were copies of financial statements, correspondence, and records connecting Northstar Maritime to several companies that had received payments from the Moretti businesses.

The documents suggested possible financial misconduct, but their meaning required careful analysis. Jonathan arranged for an independent forensic accountant to examine them.

Among the papers was a handwritten note from Lorenzo's father.

If the family begins fighting over control, remember that the businesses are not the family. The people who depend on them matter more than the name above the door.

Lorenzo read the note alone in his study.

For years, he had imagined his father's legacy as a throne that he had failed to defend. Now he wondered whether his father had been trying to teach him that the throne itself was the problem.

Abigail found him holding the letter.

“What does it say?”

He handed it to her.

She read it twice.

“Your father sounds like my mother.”

“Was she a businesswoman?”

“No. She was a home health aide who worked double shifts and still found time to bring groceries to an elderly neighbor.”

Lorenzo smiled faintly.

“Maybe that's what leadership is supposed to look like.”

They stood together by the window.

Then Abigail's phone rang.

It was the rehabilitation clinic.

Her mother had been moved to a different room after a man claiming to be a family representative arrived and requested access to her medical records. The staff had refused because he could not verify his authority.

Margaret was safe, but the clinic wanted Abigail to confirm the family's security arrangements.

Abigail immediately called Rosa.

The man had left before security arrived.

The clinic had recorded his vehicle's license plate, but the registration belonged to a rental company.

Rosa checked the estate's recent visitor records.

The same vehicle had appeared outside the Moretti property three times during the previous week.

“Someone is watching your mother,” Lorenzo said.

Abigail's face hardened.

“Then we stop them.”

Before Rosa could answer, Jonathan called with an urgent update.

The forensic accountant had found a payment from a Northstar shell company to an account controlled by a firm that had represented Senator Vale.

The payment was made forty-eight hours before Lorenzo's accident.

May you like

And the recipient's name was not Senator Vale's.

It was Margaret Hayes.
