Chapter 18 - THE TRUTH BEHIND THE CLOSED DOOR|

The recovered recording was sent to an independent audio specialist. Investigators compared the voice with legally obtained reference recordings from people who had worked closely with the Moretti family.

The process took several days.

During that time, Lorenzo focused on rebuilding his life outside the investigation. He resumed regular rehabilitation sessions, attended foundation meetings, and began planning a public review of the family's legitimate business operations.

Abigail completed the next stage of her professional certification and reduced her private nursing hours so that her relationship with Lorenzo would not compromise his care.

They discussed the change openly.

“I don't want our relationship to depend on your employment,” Lorenzo told her.

“Neither do I.”

“Then we will arrange independent care, and you can decide what you want to do next.”

Abigail smiled.

“I have already decided that I want to finish my certification.”

“And after that?”

“After that, I intend to sleep for twelve hours.”

He laughed.

“I'll consider it an important medical milestone.”

Their affection grew through ordinary moments: breakfast in the conservatory, quiet walks along the garden paths, and conversations that did not end with someone threatening them.

Lorenzo learned that he could disagree without becoming cruel. Abigail learned that accepting help did not mean surrendering her independence.

Margaret, meanwhile, continued recovering. Her speech improved, and she began attending rehabilitation sessions with renewed determination. She teased Lorenzo whenever he visited, insisting that he was far too serious for a man who had recently discovered how to enjoy bad jokes.

Then the audio specialist completed the preliminary report.

The unidentified voice was consistent with Victor Cole, Vanessa's security coordinator.

Cole had already acknowledged arranging access to the vehicle, but he claimed he believed the inspection was legitimate. The recording suggested that he had known more than he had admitted.

When confronted with the audio, Cole requested legal counsel and eventually agreed to provide a fuller statement.

He explained that Vanessa had asked him to arrange a private meeting with a mechanic. She claimed she needed the vehicle's security systems examined because Lorenzo had received threats.

Cole admitted that he had allowed access without proper authorization. He said he did not personally tamper with the brakes, but he had seen Vanessa enter the garage carrying a small tool case.

His statement was not enough to settle every question. Investigators continued checking the repair records, messages, and physical evidence.

But it placed Vanessa at the center of the preparations.

The recording also contained a reference to a locked door inside the estate's old service wing.

Lorenzo remembered the room.

His father had used it as a private office before his death. Afterward, Matteo had ordered it sealed, claiming that the contents were being preserved for legal review.

Rosa arranged for the room to be examined with proper authorization and documentation. Inside, they found old account books, a broken desk, and several boxes of personal correspondence.

Most of the material concerned legitimate family business.

One box contained letters between Vanessa and an individual identified only by the initials R.V.

The letters discussed Northstar Maritime, the disputed medical assessment, and a plan to transfer control of Lorenzo's business holdings after the accident.

One letter was particularly revealing.

If Lorenzo survives, the incapacity order must be ready before he can speak to an independent physician. If he does not, the company passes to Matteo, and the rest becomes irrelevant.

The letter was signed by Vanessa.

It did not identify who had helped her prepare the order, but the attached draft contained handwritten corrections matching the style of Dr. Whitaker's notes.

Jonathan immediately arranged for the letters to be preserved and reviewed.

Then Abigail discovered a second envelope hidden beneath the box's lining.

It contained a short letter from Alessandro Moretti, written shortly before his death.

Lorenzo, if you ever find this, remember that the most dangerous betrayal does not come from an enemy. It comes from someone who has convinced you that your fear is proof of your weakness.

The letter ended with a name.

Not Matteo.

Not Vanessa.

Not Senator Vale.

It named the person Alessandro had trusted to protect his family.

Rosa Bellini.
