Chapter 8 - The Absent Husband

The next morning, the breakfast table was weighed down by heavy silver platters and suffocating hostility. Julian Vance sat at the head of the table, his expression distracted and tense. As the CEO of Vance Global, Julian was constantly pulled between the relentless demands of his corporation and the toxic domestic warfare orchestrated by his mother.
Julian glanced across at Clara, noticing the pale exhaustion lingering around her eyes. "Clara, are you alright? You look pale," he murmured, his voice carrying genuine concern, though he remained completely oblivious to the poisoned tea incident from the night before. Eleanor had ensured the servants kept absolute silence under threat of immediate termination.
Before Clara could answer, Eleanor chimed in with a sickeningly sweet, patronizing smile. "Oh, the poor dear is just overwhelmed, Julian. City life and high society are far too demanding for someone of her... modest background. Perhaps she needs a few days of quiet isolation in the East Wing to collect her thoughts."

Isolation. It was a veiled threat—house arrest disguised as concern, designed to break her spirit completely. Clara looked up, meeting Julian’s eyes with a steady, unblinking gaze.
"I'm perfectly fine, Julian," Clara replied, her voice eerily calm. "In fact, I have never seen things more clearly than I do right now." Julian frowned, sensing a strange undercurrent in her words, but before he could press further, his phone rang with an urgent corporate crisis, and he rushed out of the room.
