Chapter 6 - The Bitter Draft

The silence inside the grand dining hall was absolute, heavy with a suffocating tension that made every breath feel like swallowed glass. Clara stood frozen beside the polished marble floor, her fingers still smarting from the impact of the porcelain cup. The dark, burning liquid stained the pristine white stone at her feet, a stark reminder of the malice hidden beneath the family's glittering facade.

Across the table, Eleanor Vance sat back in her high-backed velvet chair, her face carved from cold, merciless marble. Her eyes gleamed with a cruel satisfaction, daring Clara to defy her in front of the assembled household staff and relatives.

"You think because my son married you, you hold some power in this house," Eleanor spoke, her voice smooth, venomous, and dripping with aristocratic contempt. "In this family, you exist only because I permit it. That cup was a warning. Next time, it won't miss your lips."

Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird, but beneath the terror, a cold, unyielding spark ignited. For months, she had endured the insults, the silent gaslighting, and the systematic erosion of her dignity, believing that love and patience could eventually bridge the gap. But looking down at the dark stain on the floor, she realized some monsters cannot be reasoned with. They can only be defeated.
