Chapter 7 - Whispers in the Dark

Later that night, the Vance estate slept under a blanket of heavy fog, but Clara remained wide awake in the dimly lit guest suite. Sitting at the mahogany writing desk, she pulled out a small, encrypted thumb drive from the lining of her suitcase.
Clara was not merely the humble orphan Eleanor assumed she had trapped. Before marrying Julian Vance, Clara had spent five years working as a high-level cyber intelligence analyst for private corporate security firms, specializing in unearthing hidden financial webs and illicit shell companies. When Eleanor had first begun her campaign of harassment, Clara’s instincts had flared, prompting her to quietly plant secure monitoring nodes into the estate’s private network.

The screen of her laptop flickered to life, casting a pale blue glow across her sharp, determined features. She opened the encrypted folder labeled Vance & Co. Internal Ledger. Eleanor thought she was the undisputed queen of this domain, untouchable and supreme. But Clara smiled faintly in the darkness, realizing that the old woman had just handed her the very weapon needed to tear the entire empire down.
