Chapter 4 - The Freeze Order

At 8:00 AM the following morning, Marcus Sterling walked into my hospital room carrying a thick legal docket.
"Miss Hayes," Marcus said with quiet authority. "We filed an emergency ex parte restraining order with the Maricopa County Superior Court. Your father and brother are legally barred from coming within five hundred yards of you or this hospital."
"What about my surgery funds?" I asked weakly.
Marcus smiled, placing a certified cashier's receipt onto my bedside table.
"Dr. Vance personally covered the hospital's surgical escrow deposit at sunrise," Marcus revealed. "Your sixty-five thousand dollars is securely locked in a blind escrow trust under my firm's management. Furthermore, our forensic audit uncovered something extraordinary."
Marcus spread financial records across the tray table.
"When your maternal grandmother passed away five years ago, she left an irrevocable five-million-dollar trust specifically designated for your medical care and education," Marcus explained. "Arthur and Cynthia Hayes forged your signature on a power-of-attorney waiver, illegally diverting four hundred thousand dollars a year into Arthur's commercial real estate ventures and Brandon's shell company."
My heart stopped in sheer disbelief. "They stole my grandmother's legacy?"
"And they spent it on luxury cars, country club memberships, and Brandon's gambling debts," Marcus said grimly. "Tomorrow morning, the Arizona Department of Financial Institutions and the FBI are executing search warrants on Arthur's corporate offices."

Julian stepped up beside my bed, taking my hand in his. His grip was warm, steady, and filled with a promise that banished the darkness of my childhood.
"Focus entirely on your surgery tomorrow, Mia," Julian whispered gently, kissing my forehead. "Let us handle the monsters."
