BEFORE THE VOWS WERE SPOKEN / Chapter 6 / 6

CHAPTER 6 — The Last Lie

CHAPTER 6 — The Last Lie

The hospital room became unbearably quiet.

No one dared speak.

The coroner's report lay open on Evelyn's lap, its final sentence burning into her eyes.

Cause of death: Gunshot wound to the chest.

Not the fall.

Not the cliff.

Not the storm.

Someone had gone down to that narrow stretch of rocks...

...and executed Grace.

Evelyn slowly lifted her head.

"Who had a gun that night?"

Richard remained silent.

Anna looked at Adrian.

Adrian answered first.

"Richard."

Every eye turned toward him.

Richard let out a long, exhausted breath.

"Yes."

"I always carried one."

Evelyn's voice trembled.

"...Did you kill her?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he walked to the window, watching the rain slide down the glass.

"When I reached the bottom..."

"...Grace was still breathing."

The room froze.

Richard closed his eyes.

"She looked at me."

"And she smiled."

His voice cracked.

"She said she forgave me."

A tear rolled down his face.

"I begged her to hold on."

"I called for an ambulance."

"I tried to stop the bleeding."

He turned slowly.

"I never fired a single shot."

Adrian frowned.

"Then who did?"

Richard looked at Evelyn.

"I thought..."

"...it was you."

The words hit her like ice.

"What?"

"You disappeared for several minutes."

"When I found Grace..."

"...you were gone."

Evelyn shook her head.

"No..."

"I don't remember."

Anna suddenly stepped forward.

"I do."

Everyone looked at her.

She swallowed hard.

"I wasn't honest."

Adrian stared at her in disbelief.

"You were there?"

Anna nodded.

"I followed Grace."

"Why?"

"Because she called me."

Silence.

Anna looked down at the floor.

"I wasn't just your wife, Adrian."

"I was Grace's investigative partner."

"What?"

"For nearly a year, we were gathering evidence against Richard Carter."

Richard's face darkened.

"You stole company records."

"I exposed your money laundering."

"I exposed your bribery."

"And Grace..."

Anna's voice broke.

"...found the one piece of evidence that could destroy everything."

The envelope.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Grace hadn't been running from Adrian.

She had been protecting evidence.

Anna continued.

"When I reached the cliff..."

"...I heard a gunshot."

Evelyn's heart nearly stopped.

"You saw who fired it?"

Anna slowly nodded.

"I saw someone."

"Who?"

Tears filled Anna's eyes.

"I couldn't believe it."

She looked directly at Richard.

"It wasn't you."

Richard stared at her.

"It wasn't Adrian."

She turned toward Evelyn.

"It wasn't you."

The room fell into complete silence.

Evelyn whispered,

"Then who?"

Anna slowly raised one trembling finger...

...toward the hospital door.

Everyone instinctively turned.

Standing in the doorway was an elderly man wearing a dark gray suit.

His white hair was neatly combed.

His expression was calm.

Almost emotionless.

Richard's face instantly lost all color.

"...Harold."

Evelyn frowned.

"Our family lawyer?"

Harold Bennett gave a polite smile.

"For thirty-two years."

Richard took one slow step backward.

"You..."

Harold nodded.

"Yes."

"I cleaned up your scandals."

"I buried your lawsuits."

"I bribed witnesses."

"And when Grace discovered everything..."

He smiled sadly.

"...I solved the problem."

Evelyn felt sick.

"You killed her?"

Harold didn't deny it.

"I protected my client."

Richard shouted,

"I NEVER ASKED YOU TO DO THAT!"

"No."

Harold remained strangely calm.

"You didn't."

"You were too weak."

"You wanted to confess."

"I couldn't allow that."

Anna stared in horror.

"You acted on your own?"

"I've spent thirty years building the Carter empire."

"I wasn't going to let one idealistic young woman destroy it."

Richard collapsed into a chair.

His hands covered his face.

"My God..."

Harold looked at Evelyn.

"I also arranged your memory treatment."

She froze.

"What?"

"I convinced your father it was the only way to save you."

Richard looked up sharply.

"You said the doctors recommended it!"

Harold smiled.

"They trusted my recommendation."

Everything unraveled in an instant.

The memory loss.

The altered reports.

The missing footage.

The forged documents.

Every lie...

Every cover-up...

Every broken life...

Led back to one man who had quietly stood beside the Carter family for decades.

Police sirens echoed outside the hospital.

Anna lowered her phone.

"I called them twenty minutes ago."

Harold nodded slowly.

"I assumed you would."

He calmly extended both hands.

"I won't resist."

As officers entered the room, Harold looked one last time at Richard.

"I served your family faithfully."

Richard stared at him with tears streaming down his face.

"You destroyed it."

The officers led Harold away.

Silence returned.

No one spoke for a long time.

Finally, Evelyn walked toward Adrian.

There were no dramatic speeches.

No grand declarations.

She simply looked into the eyes of the man who had carried the blame she was never meant to bear.

"I'm sorry."

Adrian gave a faint, heartbreaking smile.

"I know."

She reached for his hand.

This time...

He didn't let go.

Outside, the rain had stopped.

For the first time in three years, the truth no longer hid in the shadows.

Grace's name would finally be cleared.

Richard would face justice for the crimes he had concealed.

Harold would answer for the murder he committed.

And Evelyn...

She finally understood that the most painful betrayals were not always born from hatred.

Sometimes...

They were born from desperate love, fear, and the belief that one terrible lie could protect the people we couldn't bear to lose.

The wedding had ended before the vows were spoken.

But perhaps...

For the first time in years...

May you like

The truth had finally begun.

THE END
