CHAPTER 4 — The Night Everything Burned

CHAPTER 4 — The Night Everything Burned

The USB drive felt impossibly heavy in Evelyn's trembling hand.

A piece of plastic.

Barely an ounce.

Yet somehow, it carried the weight of three shattered lives.

No one spoke.

Richard's eyes never left the drive.

"Evelyn," he said quietly, "if you watch it, nothing will ever be the same."

She looked at him, her heart pounding.

"My life stopped being the same the moment Anna walked into my wedding."

She turned toward the television mounted on the hospital wall.

"Play it."

Richard stepped forward.

"No."

Adrian blocked his path.

"It's over, Richard."

"For you, maybe."

For the first time, Richard's carefully crafted composure cracked completely.

"You don't understand what this will do to her!"

"No," Adrian replied, his voice low. "You're afraid she'll remember what you did."

Anna inserted the USB into the television.

The screen flickered.

Static.

Then...

A timestamp appeared.

June 14 — Three Years Earlier

The footage showed the parking lot outside a seaside hotel.

Rain poured relentlessly.

A young woman ran into view.

Grace.

She looked terrified.

Seconds later, Adrian appeared behind her.

He wasn't chasing her.

He was begging.

"Grace, please... just let me explain!"

She spun around, tears mixing with the rain.

"You lied to me!"

"I was trying to protect you!"

"You don't protect someone by hiding the truth!"

She turned and ran toward the cliffs overlooking the ocean.

The security camera couldn't capture what happened next.

Only distant silhouettes.

Only blurred movement.

Then...

Another car entered the frame.

A black luxury sedan.

Richard's.

The timestamp continued.

Thirty seconds later...

Evelyn appeared.

She jumped from the passenger seat before the vehicle had even stopped.

She sprinted toward the cliff.

The footage ended.

The room fell silent.

Evelyn stared blankly at the frozen image of herself.

"I was there..."

Her voice barely existed.

"I was there."

Richard closed his eyes.

"Yes."

She slowly turned toward him.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you begged me not to."

"I DON'T REMEMBER DOING THAT!"

Her scream echoed through the room.

The television suddenly switched to another camera angle.

This one came from a nearby restaurant.

The image was clearer.

The sound worked.

Everyone instinctively leaned closer.

Grace stood near the edge of the cliff, crying uncontrollably.

Adrian stopped several feet away.

"I'm not asking you to forgive me."

"I'm asking you to come home."

Grace shook her head.

"There is no home anymore."

Then another voice entered the recording.

"Evelyn!"

Grace turned.

So did Adrian.

Young Evelyn ran toward them.

The three friends finally stood together.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then Grace smiled sadly.

"I knew you'd come."

Hospital Evelyn stared at the screen.

The words struck something deep inside her.

A memory.

Grace hugging her tightly.

Whispering...

"Promise me you'll never let him lie to you the way he lied to me."

Evelyn gasped.

Another memory returned.

She remembered crying.

Remembered begging Grace not to leave.

Remembered saying—

"We can fix this together."

Tears streamed down her face.

"I'm remembering..."

Adrian's eyes filled with hope.

"Keep going."

On the screen, Grace reached into her coat pocket.

She removed a small envelope.

She handed it to Evelyn.

"If anything happens to me..."

"Give this to the police."

Richard's breathing stopped.

Hospital Evelyn noticed.

"Dad..."

He looked away.

"What was in the envelope?"

No answer.

The recording continued.

Grace suddenly looked behind Evelyn.

Her smile disappeared.

"No..."

She whispered.

"Why is he here?"

The camera couldn't see who she was looking at.

Only Adrian...

Evelyn...

...and Grace.

Then—

Someone else entered from outside the frame.

The image blurred.

Voices shouted over one another.

The microphone distorted.

A violent struggle.

Grace screamed.

The screen shook violently.

Then...

Nothing.

The footage froze.

Corrupted.

The final thirty seconds were missing.

Silence consumed the room.

Evelyn looked at Anna.

"That's it?"

Anna nodded.

"The rest of the file was deleted."

Richard finally exhaled.

A tiny smile appeared on his lips.

"You see?"

"It proves nothing."

"No," Adrian said quietly.

"It proves someone edited the evidence."

Every eye turned toward Richard.

He laughed.

"You have no proof."

Adrian reached into his jacket.

"I do."

He removed another envelope.

Older.

Worn.

He handed it to Evelyn.

"I've carried this since Grace died."

She opened it carefully.

Inside...

The missing letter.

Grace's letter.

The envelope was addressed in elegant handwriting.

To Evelyn.

Her hands shook as she unfolded the paper.

The first sentence stole the air from her lungs.

If you're reading this... I didn't survive.

Her vision blurred with tears.

She continued.

None of this is Adrian's fault.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Years of guilt washing over him.

Evelyn kept reading.

The person you should fear is someone you've trusted your entire life.

Richard's face turned ghostly pale.

He'll convince everyone he's protecting you.

Don't believe him.

Evelyn's hands trembled uncontrollably.

Slowly...

Painfully...

She lifted her eyes toward her father.

Richard didn't deny it.

He simply whispered,

"I can explain."

Evelyn took one step backward.

Then another.

"No..."

"Dad..."

Her voice broke.

"Tell me she's lying."

Richard's shoulders slumped.

"I never wanted Grace to die."

The room froze.

Not I didn't kill her.

Not It's a lie.

Instead...

"I never wanted her to die."

Evelyn's heart shattered.

"You were there."

Richard lowered his head.

"Yes."

"You knew everything."

"Yes."

"You lied to me for three years."

He couldn't answer.

She stared at the man she had trusted since childhood.

The man who had kissed her forehead at the altar only hours earlier.

The man who had promised her he would always protect her.

She no longer saw her father.

She saw a stranger.

Then Anna quietly asked the question no one else dared to ask.

"If Richard didn't want Grace dead..."

"...who finished what he started?"

The hospital room fell into complete silence.

Adrian slowly looked toward Evelyn.

His expression wasn't one of fear.

It was heartbreak.

"There was someone else on that cliff."

Evelyn frowned.

"Who?"

Adrian's answer was barely audible.

"The one person Grace trusted more than anyone..."

He looked directly into Evelyn's eyes.

May you like

"...you."
