CHAPTER 2 — The Woman in the Forgotten Photograph

CHAPTER 2 — The Woman in the Forgotten Photograph

No one moved.

The vineyard, moments ago filled with music and laughter, had become eerily silent. Even the wind seemed to hesitate, as if nature itself was waiting for the next confession.

Evelyn stared at Adrian.

Every memory they had built together now felt contaminated.

Every "I love you."

Every promise.

Every kiss.

Every dream.

"Were any of them real?" she whispered.

Adrian opened his mouth, but no words came.

Anna answered for him.

"They were."

Evelyn turned sharply.

Anna's eyes glistened with tears.

"That's what makes this so cruel."

She slowly reached into her bag once more.

"I didn't come here to ruin your life."

She placed an old photograph into Evelyn's trembling hand.

"I came because someone should have told you the truth."

The picture showed Adrian standing beside a young woman with long chestnut hair. They were smiling in front of a small beach chapel.

The woman looked strangely familiar.

Evelyn frowned.

"I've... seen her before."

Anna nodded.

"You have."

"I don't remember where."

"Because someone made sure you wouldn't."

Those words sent a chill through Evelyn's body.

"What does that mean?"

Anna hesitated before answering.

"Her name was Grace."

A long silence followed.

"She was Adrian's first wife."

The crowd erupted into whispers.

Three women.

Three weddings.

Three lives.

Evelyn looked at Adrian with horror.

"Is that true?"

He slowly lowered his head.

"...Yes."

Her knees nearly gave way.

"You've been married three times?"

"No."

His voice cracked.

"Only twice."

Anna looked at him with disbelief.

"You still can't tell the truth?"

Adrian closed his eyes.

"Grace never became my wife."

Everyone froze.

"What?"

"The ceremony never finished."

His breathing became heavier.

"She died before we exchanged our vows."

The whispers vanished instantly.

Anna herself looked confused.

"You told me she left you."

"I lied."

"Why?"

"Because the truth was worse."

For the first time since arriving, Adrian looked genuinely broken.

"I couldn't admit that she died because of me."

The sentence struck like thunder.

Evelyn felt her heartbeat pounding in her ears.

"What happened?"

Adrian swallowed hard.

"After the rehearsal dinner, we argued."

His voice trembled with guilt.

"She found out I had hidden something from her."

"What?"

He looked at Evelyn.

"The same thing I hid from you."

Before he could continue, a black luxury SUV sped through the vineyard entrance.

Its tires screeched across the gravel.

Several guests stepped back in alarm.

The rear door opened.

An older man stepped out wearing an expensive tailored suit.

Silver hair.

Sharp blue eyes.

Absolute authority.

Evelyn's face drained of color.

"Dad?"

Richard Carter ignored everyone else.

He walked straight toward his daughter.

"What are you still doing here?"

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"The wedding is over."

Evelyn stepped backward.

"You knew?"

Richard glanced briefly at Adrian before answering.

"I warned you about him years ago."

Anna suddenly spoke.

"No."

Richard slowly turned toward her.

"You didn't warn her."

"You protected yourself."

A flicker crossed his face.

Barely noticeable.

But Adrian saw it.

"So..." Adrian murmured.

"You finally came."

Richard smiled faintly.

"I wondered how long it would take before someone brought up Grace."

Evelyn stared between the two men.

"What is happening?"

No one answered immediately.

Richard adjusted his cufflinks as though discussing business.

"Grace worked for my company."

Anna's eyes widened.

"You knew her?"

"I knew everyone involved."

Adrian clenched his fists.

"You destroyed her life."

Richard laughed quietly.

"No."

"I simply gave her a choice."

"What choice?"

Richard looked directly at Evelyn.

"The same one I gave every woman who got too close to Adrian."

The entire vineyard fell silent again.

Evelyn's voice shook.

"What are you talking about?"

Richard reached into his jacket.

He removed a thin envelope.

"I hoped you'd never see this."

He handed it to her.

Inside was a psychiatric evaluation.

Her name was printed at the top.

Patient: Evelyn Carter.

Date.

One year ago.

She stared in confusion.

"I've never seen this."

Richard's expression remained unreadable.

"Exactly."

Her hands trembled as she flipped the pages.

Words blurred together.

Memory suppression therapy.

Trauma-related memory deletion.

Voluntary consent signed by patient.

Her signature appeared at the bottom.

"No..."

She whispered.

"This isn't possible."

"I never signed this."

"You did."

"I would've remembered!"

Richard's eyes softened for the first time.

"That's the point."

The sentence echoed through her mind.

She looked at Adrian.

His face had turned pale.

"You knew."

He nodded.

"I begged them not to do it."

Tears streamed down Evelyn's cheeks.

"What memories?"

Adrian couldn't answer.

He simply whispered...

"Us."

The world tilted.

The guests.

The flowers.

The music stands.

Everything blurred.

She remembered meeting Adrian only two years ago.

Didn't she?

But suddenly...

Tiny fragments flashed across her mind.

A beach.

Rain.

A hospital corridor.

A silver engagement ring.

Adrian crying.

A little white house she had never visited...

...or had she?

She grabbed her head.

"I..."

Pain exploded behind her eyes.

Images appeared for less than a second before disappearing again.

Adrian running toward her.

Someone screaming.

Blood.

Grace.

Richard's voice cut through the chaos.

"That's enough."

He stepped between them.

"Take her home."

Two security guards moved toward Evelyn.

Adrian immediately blocked their path.

"No."

Richard's smile vanished.

"You still think you can save her?"

"I owe her the truth."

"No."

Richard stepped closer until they stood face to face.

"You owe her silence."

Their eyes locked.

Years of hatred passing silently between them.

Then Richard leaned close enough that only Adrian could hear.

"If she remembers that night..."

"...she'll never forgive herself."

Adrian's face lost all color.

Evelyn looked from one man to the other.

"What night?"

No one answered.

But she noticed something she hadn't before.

Richard wasn't afraid of Adrian.

He wasn't afraid of Anna.

He was afraid...

...of Evelyn remembering.

As the black SUV pulled away with Richard standing beside it, Evelyn looked down at the old photograph again.

For the first time, she noticed something hidden in the background.

A fourth person.

Partially obscured.

Only half a face.

But unmistakably...

It was her.

Standing beside Grace.

Smiling.

As if they had known each other for years.

Her breath caught.

"I've never met this woman..."

She looked at Adrian, whose eyes were filled with quiet devastation.

He whispered the words that shattered everything she believed about her own past.

"Yes, you did."

May you like

"You were her best friend."
