CHAPTER 3 — The Memories That Refused to Die

CHAPTER 3 — The Memories That Refused to Die

Evelyn didn't remember collapsing.

One moment she was standing beneath the wedding arch, clutching the faded photograph.

The next, she was sitting alone inside a quiet hospital room.

The smell of antiseptic filled the air.

A heart monitor beeped steadily beside her bed.

Outside the window, rain slid down the glass in thin silver lines.

For several minutes, she simply stared at the ceiling.

Then the door opened.

Adrian stepped inside.

His tuxedo was wrinkled, his tie gone. The confident businessman the world admired had disappeared. What remained was a man who hadn't slept in years.

"You shouldn't be here," Evelyn said coldly.

"I know."

"Then why are you?"

He looked at her for a long moment before answering.

"Because if I leave now... you'll only hear his version of the story."

"My father?"

Adrian nodded.

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

"I don't know who to believe anymore."

"You don't have to believe me."

He slowly placed a small wooden box on the bedside table.

"You only need to remember."

She frowned.

"What is this?"

"I've carried it for three years."

He pushed it toward her.

"It belongs to you."

With trembling fingers, Evelyn opened the lid.

Inside lay a silver key.

A dried lavender flower.

And an old Polaroid photograph.

The moment she saw it, her breath caught.

She was laughing.

Standing beside Grace.

The two women had their arms around each other, wearing matching graduation gowns.

On the back, written in faded ink:

Forever sisters. No secrets between us.

Her vision blurred.

"No..."

Another image flashed inside her mind.

Grace teaching her how to drive.

The two of them dancing barefoot in the kitchen.

Late-night conversations over cheap pizza.

Laughter.

So much laughter.

Then—

Pain.

A violent headache tore through her skull.

She gasped, grabbing the edge of the bed.

"They're coming back..."

Adrian instinctively reached for her hand.

She pulled away.

"Don't touch me."

His hand froze in midair.

"I'm sorry."

"So am I."

Tears rolled down Evelyn's cheeks.

"If Grace was my best friend..."

She swallowed hard.

"Why don't I remember loving her?"

Before Adrian could answer, the room door burst open.

Richard Carter entered with two attorneys.

His expression was calm, almost annoyed.

"I thought I instructed the hospital not to allow visitors."

Adrian stood.

"I'm leaving."

"No."

Richard's voice became sharp.

"I think you've lied enough."

He turned to his lawyers.

"Wait outside."

The room fell silent.

Richard looked at his daughter with unexpected tenderness.

"Evelyn."

"You've had a terrible day."

"You don't need more confusion."

She stared at him.

"Did you erase my memories?"

A long silence.

Then—

"I tried to protect you."

"That's not an answer."

"I signed the consent forms."

"You forged them?"

"I signed because you begged me to."

She shook her head violently.

"No."

"I would never ask someone to erase my own life."

Richard slowly sat beside her bed.

"You weren't thinking clearly."

"What happened?"

His jaw tightened.

"You tried to kill yourself."

The words sucked the air from the room.

Adrian looked away.

Evelyn's face turned white.

"...What?"

Richard's eyes filled with tears for the first time.

"The night Grace died..."

"You blamed yourself."

"You wouldn't eat."

"You wouldn't sleep."

"You kept saying you wished you'd died instead."

His voice broke.

"I thought erasing those memories would save your life."

Evelyn looked toward Adrian.

He remained silent.

Not denying it.

Not confirming it.

She felt as though the room was spinning.

"So..."

"I really did know Grace."

"Yes."

"I really loved her."

Richard nodded.

"And she died."

Another memory surfaced.

Rain.

A cliff overlooking the ocean.

Grace crying.

Someone shouting—

Then darkness.

Evelyn screamed, clutching her head.

The monitor beside her began screaming with her.

Doctors rushed into the room.

Nurses followed.

Everything became chaos.

"She's having another episode!"

"Clear the room!"

Adrian refused to move.

Richard grabbed his arm.

"This is your fault!"

Adrian shoved him away.

"No."

"It's yours."

The two men stared at each other with years of hatred burning between them.

Then a calm female voice interrupted.

"Both of you are wrong."

Everyone turned.

Anna stood quietly in the doorway.

She looked exhausted.

But determined.

"I've stayed silent long enough."

Richard's face hardened.

"You should leave."

"I won't."

She stepped into the room.

"I know who killed Grace."

Silence.

Even the heart monitor seemed quieter.

Evelyn slowly lifted her head.

"What did you say?"

Anna looked directly into her eyes.

"I spent years believing it was Adrian."

"I was wrong."

Adrian stared at her in disbelief.

"You knew?"

"I found the evidence last week."

Richard's breathing became uneven.

Anna reached into her coat pocket.

She removed a small USB drive.

"I broke into Adrian's storage unit."

"I found security footage he kept hidden."

Adrian's eyes widened.

"You opened that box?"

"I had to."

She handed the drive to Evelyn.

"This contains the last twenty-four hours of Grace's life."

Richard lunged forward.

"Don't!"

Everyone froze.

It was the first time anyone had seen him lose control.

His composure shattered.

His face twisted with genuine fear.

Anna stepped backward.

"So you remember what's on it."

Richard's voice became desperate.

"Evelyn..."

"Please."

"Don't watch it."

She stared at her father.

For the first time in her life...

He looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not powerful.

Terrified.

She slowly took the USB drive.

"What's on it?"

No one answered.

Anna whispered,

"The truth."

Evelyn looked from the USB...

...to Adrian...

...to her father.

Three people.

Three completely different versions of the same past.

Only one could be telling the truth.

Then Adrian quietly said the words that made every person in the room go still.

"There isn't one murderer."

May you like

"There were two."
