CHAPTER 1 — The Wedding That Should Never Have Happened

CHAPTER 1 — The Wedding That Should Never Have Happened
The morning sun painted the vineyard in gold, as though heaven itself had decided to bless the occasion.
Rows of ivory roses lined the aisle. Crystal chandeliers hung beneath ancient oak trees, sparkling softly in the summer breeze. A string quartet played a slow arrangement of Can't Help Falling in Love, and nearly two hundred guests stood with warm smiles, waiting for the bride.
Everything looked perfect.
Everything had been planned to perfection.
Evelyn Carter took one slow breath before stepping onto the white aisle.
At twenty-nine, she had spent years believing that happiness wasn't something people found—it was something they fought for.
And today, after losing her mother, surviving heartbreak, and rebuilding her life from nothing, she finally believed she'd won.
At the end of the aisle stood Adrian Vale.
Tall. Elegant. Calm.
The man who had taught her how to trust again.
Their eyes met.
He smiled.
It wasn't the dazzling smile that had once made magazine covers.
It was softer.
More fragile.
Almost... guilty.
Evelyn frowned for the briefest moment.
He's nervous, she thought.
So was she.
The music swelled.
Her father gently squeezed her arm.
"You look exactly like your mother," he whispered.
Evelyn smiled through gathering tears.
"I hope she'd be proud."
"She would."
He kissed her forehead.
Neither of them noticed Adrian's smile disappear.
Twenty minutes later, the ceremony reached its final vow.
The officiant smiled warmly.
"If anyone present knows of any lawful reason why these two should not be joined in marriage..."
Silence.
The guests exchanged amused glances.
No one expected anyone to answer.
Then...
A woman's voice cut through the air.
"I do."
Every head turned.
At the far end of the vineyard stood a woman dressed entirely in black.
No makeup.
No jewelry.
Dark circles beneath exhausted eyes.
She wasn't beautiful in the glamorous sense.
She looked... broken.
As if life had carved grief into every inch of her face.
The security guards immediately moved toward her.
She didn't resist.
Instead, she raised one trembling hand.
"Don't touch me."
Her voice cracked.
"I only came to stop another woman from living my nightmare."
The music stopped.
The entire vineyard fell silent.
Evelyn stared at the stranger.
"I'm sorry... do I know you?"
The woman slowly looked toward Adrian.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"No."
A painful smile spread across her face.
"But your fiancé does."
Adrian didn't move.
He didn't even blink.
For several unbearable seconds...
No one breathed.
Then the woman reached into her handbag and removed a folded document.
She held it high.
"My name is Anna Brooks."
She swallowed.
"And Adrian Vale is still legally my husband."
The vineyard exploded.
Gasps.
Whispers.
Someone dropped a champagne glass.
The crystal shattered against the stone floor.
Evelyn laughed.
Not because she found it funny.
Because her mind refused to process what she'd just heard.
"What kind of joke is this?"
No one answered.
She turned toward Adrian.
"Tell them."
He remained frozen.
"Adrian..."
His jaw tightened.
Still...
Nothing.
Her heartbeat became painfully loud.
"Adrian... say something."
Finally...
He spoke.
Barely above a whisper.
"...Anna."
The single word was enough.
Evelyn felt the ground disappear beneath her feet.
He knew her.
Anna slowly walked toward the altar.
Security hesitated.
The guests instinctively stepped aside.
She looked directly into Evelyn's eyes.
"I'm not here because I hate you."
Her voice trembled.
"I'm here because I was you."
Confusion swept across Evelyn's face.
Anna gently unfolded the document.
Their marriage certificate.
Official.
Stamped.
Registered.
Only eight months old.
The date hit Evelyn like a bullet.
Impossible.
Eight months ago...
Adrian had been living with her.
Planning this wedding.
Choosing rings.
Talking about children.
"No..."
She whispered.
"No... that's fake."
Anna nodded sadly.
"I wish it were."
She reached into her purse again.
This time...
Photographs.
Dozens of them.
Adrian.
Anna.
Holding hands.
Leaving a courthouse.
Celebrating in a small restaurant.
Sharing an apartment.
Laughing.
Living together.
The guests leaned closer.
No one spoke anymore.
The silence had become unbearable.
Evelyn grabbed one of the photographs with shaking hands.
The date matched.
Every single one.
Her fingers went numb.
She looked back at Adrian.
"Tell me they're edited."
Nothing.
"Tell me she's lying!"
His breathing became uneven.
He finally lifted his eyes.
There was no anger.
No defense.
Only unbearable guilt.
"I'm sorry."
Two words.
That was all.
Evelyn slapped him.
Hard.
The sound echoed across the vineyard.
No one dared move.
Her entire body shook violently.
"I gave you everything."
Tears streamed down her face.
"I defended you when my family doubted you."
"I trusted you."
"I loved you."
Her voice broke completely.
"And you..."
She couldn't finish.
Adrian closed his eyes.
"I never wanted you to find out like this."
Anna looked at him in disbelief.
"You never wanted?"
She laughed bitterly.
"You promised me you'd tell her."
"You promised every week."
"You promised every month."
"And now you were about to marry another woman."
Adrian remained silent.
Anna's expression slowly changed.
Not into anger.
Into pity.
She looked at Evelyn again.
"I know exactly what you're feeling."
"No."
Evelyn stepped backward.
"You don't."
Anna lowered her head.
"I do."
Then she quietly added something that froze everyone.
"Because when Adrian married me..."
"...another woman walked into our wedding too."
The air itself seemed to stop.
Evelyn stared at her.
"What?"
Anna's eyes filled with tears again.
"I wasn't his first bride either."
A chill swept through the crowd.
Every guest slowly turned back toward Adrian.
Not as a groom.
But as a complete stranger.
His shoulders sagged beneath the weight of every stare.
Then, for the first time, he looked terrified.
Because he realized something.
Anna hadn't come to destroy the wedding.
She had only revealed the first secret.
May you like
And there were still many more waiting to be uncovered...
