Chapter 8 - The Gavel Falls

When the jury filed back into the courtroom at 4:30 PM, the atmosphere was thick with electric anticipation.

"Will the defendant please rise," the court clerk commanded.

Lucas stood on shaking legs, clutching the defense table with both hands.

"On Count One: Attempted Murder in the First Degree, how do you find?"

"Guilty," the jury foreperson announced with steady, unwavering conviction.

"On Count Two: Aggravated Domestic Battery with a Deadly Weapon, how do you find?"

"Guilty."

"On Count Three: Felony Child Endangerment Causing Great Bodily Harm, how do you find?"

"Guilty."

"On Counts Four through Eight: Grand Larceny, Wire Fraud, and Forgery, how do you find?"

"Guilty on all counts."

Evelyn let out a sharp gasp, collapsing back into the wooden pew, while Lucas’s legs gave out, dropping him into his chair in stunned, hollow defeat.

Judge Vance did not wait for a separate sentencing hearing. He looked down at Lucas with thunderous indignation.

"Lucas Vance, your actions against your pregnant wife were monstrous, calculated, and devoid of basic human decency," Judge Vance declared, his voice booming through the silent room. "You used fear, isolation, and physical violence to steal an inheritance and terrorize an innocent woman and her unborn child."

Judge Vance slammed his heavy gavel onto the sound block with an explosive crack that echoed through the marble walls.

"I sentence you to thirty-five years in the state maximum-security penitentiary without possibility of parole for twenty-five years. Furthermore, a permanent lifetime restraining order is enacted, stripping you of all parental rights, marital claims, and financial assets."

Four armed bailiffs stepped forward, pulling Lucas to his feet and locking heavy iron chains around his wrists and ankles.

As they dragged him toward the secure holding cell, Lucas looked back across the courtroom, his eyes meeting mine.

I did not look away. I did not flinch. I looked at him with the calm, unshakable peace of a woman who had walked through the valley of the shadow of death and emerged completely free.
