Chapter 6 - The Courtroom of Retribution

On a crisp October morning, Courtroom 302 was packed to maximum capacity with domestic advocacy groups, timber union representatives, and regional press reporters.
Judge Arthur Vance—no relation to the defendant, but known for his legendary intolerance of domestic brutality—presided from the elevated mahogany bench.
Lucas sat at the defense table dressed in an ill-fitting gray suit, his hair unkempt, his smug arrogance replaced by a tense, nervous twitch. Beside him sat his high-priced criminal defense attorney, Arthur Vance Sr., while Evelyn sat in the front spectator row clutching her handkerchief.
"The state calls Maya Vance to the stand," District Attorney Jenkins announced.
The double doors opened.
I walked into the courtroom wearing a tailored navy blazer and ivory blouse, holding my head high. I carried no cane, no bandages, and no tears. In the first row of the gallery, Claire sat holding four-month-old Sophia, who slept peacefully in her carrier.
I took the oath with a clear, resonant voice: "I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth."
For three hours, Jenkins guided me through the horror of the four-year marriage. I described the isolation, the financial control, and the terrifying afternoon when Lucas forced me into the garden trench.
Then, Jenkins turned to the defense table.
"Your Honor, the prosecution requests permission to play State's Exhibit A: the unedited forty-seven-minute audio recording recovered from the victim’s phone."

The defense attorney leapt to his feet. "Objection! The recording lacks proper chain of custody and was obtained under prejudicial circumstances!"
"Overruled, Counsel," Judge Vance barked with icy authority. "The audio was verified by the state forensic digital unit. Play the recording."
