Chapter 4 - The Mother-in-Law's Visit

On my third day in the recovery wing, while Claire was down in the cafeteria getting fresh soup, the heavy wooden door to my private room swung open.

Evelyn Vance stepped inside.

At sixty-five, Evelyn was the matriarch of the wealthy Vance family—dressed in an immaculate cream Chanel suit, her pearl necklace gleaming under the fluorescent lights, her face set in an expression of haughty, unvarnished contempt. She carried a leather portfolio under her arm and did not bother asking about her new granddaughter.

"You've made quite a theatrical production out of a simple marital spat, Maya," Evelyn stated, not sitting down, looking down at me as if I were dirt on her carpet.

"Get out of my room, Evelyn," I said, my voice steady despite the pain in my abdomen.

"You will listen to me very carefully," Evelyn replied, stepping closer to the bedside railing. "Lucas made an error in judgment, but you pushed him to it with your stubbornness. He is a prominent commercial developer. A domestic violence conviction will ruin our family firm's credit rating."

She dropped the leather portfolio onto my blanket.

"Inside is an affidavit stating that the incident in the garden was a mutual misunderstanding resulting from pregnancy-related emotional distress. You will sign it, waive all claims to the timber acreage in Montana, and agree to shared legal custody once Lucas completes a three-month anger management course. In exchange, I will deposit two hundred and fifty thousand dollars into a private trust for the baby."

I looked at the check sitting inside the transparent sleeve of the binder.

Then, with slow, deliberate precision, I picked up the folder and dropped it onto the floor at her designer heels.

"Your son tried to bury me alive, Evelyn," I said, looking her directly in her cold eyes. "He beat my stomach with a spade. The only place he is going is a state penitentiary. And you will never lay eyes on my daughter as long as you live."

Evelyn’s aristocratic composure cracked into an ugly, venomous sneer. "You have no money, Maya. You have no powerful family left. My legal team will drag this custody battle through appellate court until you are bankrupt, homeless, and stripped of parental rights. You will regret this day."

"Try me," a voice boomed from behind her.

Marcus Reed stepped through the doorway, flanked by two armed hospital security officers.

"Mrs. Vance," Marcus announced, flashing a certified emergency restraining order. "You are in violation of an active protective injunction signed by Judge Harrison one hour ago. Security, remove this woman from the building immediately."

As the security guards escorted Evelyn down the hallway, her high heels clicking frantically, Marcus turned to me with a fierce smile.

"The forensic team just finished analyzing your phone's full storage, Maya," Marcus said. "We didn't just find the garden recording. We found four months of deleted financial spyware Lucas installed on your laptop—and the offshore accounts he used to embezzle three million dollars from your father's trust."
