Chapter 12 - Barbara Comes Back

Three months before the wedding, Barbara requested one final meeting.

I agreed.

We met in a public café.

Her hair had gone almost completely gray.

She looked smaller.

“I heard you’re getting married.”

“Yes.”

“I hope he’s good.”

“He is.”

Barbara swallowed.

Then placed something on the table.

A small velvet box.

Inside was my mother’s necklace.

I stared at it.

“I thought this was lost.”

“Hunter took it.”

“Why?”

“He planned to sell it.”

My chest tightened.

Barbara pushed it toward me.

“I found it among his things.”

I touched the pendant.

“Why give it back?”

“Because it was always yours.”

I looked at the woman who had once believed nothing about me truly belonged to me—not my money, ambitions, appearance, or choices.

“Thank you.”

She began crying.

“I’m sorry.”

I believed her.

That did not mean we became family again.

But I accepted the necklace.

Sometimes forgiveness was not reopening a door.

Sometimes it was simply leaving without needing to slam it.
