Chapter 10 - The Student Who Came to My Door

The most unexpected consequence of my story arrived on a Wednesday afternoon.
A graduate student named Maya knocked on my office door.
She was crying.
“My boyfriend deleted my dissertation files.”
My stomach tightened.
“Do you have backups?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
“He said he did it because I wouldn’t quit.”
I closed my laptop.
“Sit down.”
Maya told me everything.
By evening, campus advocacy services were involved.
She stayed with a friend.
Her dissertation survived.
Months later, she defended successfully.
Afterward, she hugged me.
“You know why I came to you?”
I thought I did.
“Because of the picture.”
The photograph.
My uneven hair.
My defense.
“You looked terrified,” Maya said. “But you went in anyway.”
That night I understood something I had never expected.

Barbara had wanted my damaged hair to become a symbol of humiliation.
