Chapter 9 - The Trial of Cole Vance

The courtroom was quiet, filled with the solemn atmosphere of a high-stakes legal battle. Cole sat at the defense table, wearing a plain gray suit instead of his usual designer tuxedos. He looked thinner, his arrogant smirk replaced by a tense, nervous twitch.
Mara took the stand.
She wore a simple, elegant blue dress, her pregnancy now very prominent. She spoke clearly, her voice echoing through the courtroom as she described the years of emotional abuse, the isolation, and finally, the physical violence that culminated in the horrific bruise on her leg.
Cole’s attorney tried to cross-examine her, painting her as a disgruntled wife looking for a large divorce settlement. But Mara didn't flinch. She answered every question with calm, unshakeable truth.
Then, Dr. Elena Rostova took the stand, presenting the forensic analysis of the bruise.
"This was not a fall," Dr. Rostova testified, displaying the high-definition photos of the grip mark on the screen. "This was a violent, intentional restraint. The force required to leave this specific pattern on a pregnant woman’s skin is substantial, indicating a direct intent to control and inflict pain."
Finally, the federal prosecutor presented the financial records, proving that Cole had systematically hidden assets to prepare for a divorce, intending to leave Mara with nothing while keeping her trapped.
The judge, a stern woman with no tolerance for abusers, didn't hesitate.
"The evidence of both financial corruption and physical abuse is overwhelming," the judge declared, banging her gavel. "Cole Vance, your parental rights are hereby suspended pending the outcome of your criminal trial. A permanent restraining order is granted to Mara Vance."
