Chapter 10 - The Clear Water

One year later.
The sun was warm and gentle, casting golden light over the garden of my mountain cottage. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming lavender and the sound of wind chimes.
A small, inflatable pool sat on the grass, filled with cool, clear water.
Mara sat on a blanket nearby, laughing as she watched her six-month-old daughter, Lily, splash her tiny hands in the water. Lily had bright, curious eyes and a smile that brought pure joy to everyone who saw her.
"Come on in, the water is great!" I laughed, splashing Mara from the tiny pool, repeating the words from that fateful afternoon a year ago.
But this time, everything was different.
Mara wasn't wrapped in a thick towel. She wore a bright, colorful summer dress, her shoulders bare, her skin glowing in the sunlight. There were no bruises. No fear. No secrets.
She laughed, a real, bubbling sound of pure happiness, and dipped her feet into the cool water, holding Lily close to her chest.
"It really is," Mara said, looking up at me with eyes filled with deep gratitude. "The water is perfect."
We had survived the storm. We had dismantled the monster, and in the process, we had built a safe, beautiful world for Lily to grow up in.
Cole was currently serving a fifteen-year sentence in a federal penitentiary, his name forgotten by the high society that once adored him.

But we didn't think about him anymore. His shadow was gone, replaced by the bright, clear horizon of our new life.
I sat down on the blanket beside my sister and my niece, wrapping my arm around Mara’s shoulders. We had fought for this peace, and we were going to cherish every single second of it.
