Chapter 5 - The Silent Network

With Mara agreeing to help from the inside, I be

gan activating my own network. During my years at the domestic violence clinic, I had built strong relationships with several powerful women in the city—lawyers, journalists, and police officers who worked quietly in the shadows to protect victims.

My first meeting was with detective Sarah Jenkins, a fierce investigator who had a personal hatred for wealthy abusers who hid behind their status. We met in a quiet, out-of-the-way diner on the edge of town.

I laid out the financial documents I had gathered, along with the text message Cole had sent me.

"This isn't just domestic abuse, Sarah," I said. "Cole Vance is bribing city council members to get zoning approvals for his luxury developments. He's using shell companies to launder the money. I’m waiting on more data from his personal backup drive, but this is already enough to trigger an informal investigation."

Sarah analyzed the tax filings, her expression hardening. "This is big, Nora. If we can link these offshore accounts directly to the council members, the FBI will get involved. But we need the physical encryption keys or the direct ledger from his personal drive to make it stick."

"My sister is getting it," I said, my voice tight with anxiety. "But she’s in danger. The escalation is happening fast."

"If she gets the drive, we need to move immediately," Sarah warned. "The moment Cole realizes his data is missing, he will snap. You need to have a safe house ready for her, completely off the grid."

"I have my cottage in the mountains," I said. "It's registered under my ex-husband's cousin's name from years ago. Cole doesn't know about it. I've already started moving supplies there."

"Good," Sarah said. "Keep your phone on at all times. The moment she gives you the signal, I'll have a team ready to assist with an emergency extraction if needed. But remember, until we have that drive, we can't arrest him. We need the evidence."

As I left the diner, I felt a heavy weight pressing down on me. I was playing a high-stakes game of chess with a sociopath, and my sister's life was the prize.

That night, I received a short, simple text from Mara.

“I have it. But he’s coming home early.”

My heart leaped into my throat.
