Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Gala

The grand ballroom of the Beverly Hills Hotel was a sea of glittering diamonds, silk gowns, and clinking champagne glasses. The charity gala was in full swing, celebrating Cole’s "philanthropic" contributions to the city.

I stood near the entrance, wearing a simple but elegant dark green dress. I kept my eyes scanning the crowd until I spotted them.

Cole looked immaculate in a tailored tuxedo, laughing with a group of city officials. Beside him, Mara looked like a beautiful ghost in a flowing emerald green maternity gown that cleverly hid any bruises. She looked pale, her eyes darting nervously around the room.

I caught her eye and gave her a subtle nod. The plan was in motion.

At 9:00 PM, Cole was called to the stage to receive his award. The crowd applauded as he walked up, his smirk confident and blinding under the stage lights.

"Thank you, everyone," Cole began, holding the crystal trophy. "Success is nothing without family, and I want to thank my beautiful wife, Mara, who—"

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.

A dozen federal agents in windbreakers, accompanied by Detective Sarah Jenkins and several armed police officers, marched into the room. The music abruptly cut off. The applause died instantly.

"Cole Vance?" Sarah’s voice boomed through the microphone system, interrupting him. "You are under arrest for federal conspiracy, wire fraud, and bribery of public officials."

A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom.

Cole’s smirk froze. His face twisted in a mixture of shock and sheer rage. "This is a joke! Do you know who I am? Call my lawyers!"

"We have the warrants, Cole. And we have your personal ledger," Sarah said, stepping onto the stage.

As the agents moved in to handcuff him, Cole’s eyes frantically searched the crowd. They locked onto Mara, who had stepped away from the stage and was now standing beside me.

He realized in that instant who had betrayed him.

"You!" Cole roared, struggling against the agents as they forced his hands behind his back. "You did this! I'll destroy you, Mara! You'll never see that kid!"

May you like

"She's done running from you, Cole," I said, stepping in front of Mara, shielding her from his furious gaze.

The crowd watched in absolute silence as the golden boy of the real estate world was dragged out of his own gala in handcuffs, his expensive suit rumpled, his dignity shattered in front of everyone who mattered to him.
