Chapter 5 - The ConfrontationThe heavy door swung open, and the overhead lights flickered on.

Standing in the doorway was Daniel Dodd. He was a tall man in his late thirties, wearing an expensive tailored trench coat, his hair wet from the rain. His face twisted into a sneer the moment his eyes landed on Clara—and then shifted to me.
“Clara,” Daniel said smoothly, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him. “I had a feeling you’d try something desperate tonight. But bringing the grocery boy? Really?”
I stepped in front of Clara, shielding her. “Step back, Dodd.”
Daniel chuckled coldly, taking off his gloves. “Or what, Jake? You’ll hit me? I’m a partner at this firm. You’re a guy who carries paper bags up four flights of stairs for a living. You don't belong in this room.”
“I belong wherever she needs me,” I said quietly, my voice cold and unyielding.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed. He reached into his coat coat pocket, pulling out a smartphone. “I’m calling security. Breaking and entering, theft of firm documents. You’re both going to jail.”
Before he could dial, the office door burst open again.

Marcus Webb stepped into the office, holding a tablet and wearing a high-visibility maintenance vest. Behind him stood the building’s head security officer.
“Actually, Mr. Dodd,” Marcus said with a wide grin, “you’re the one who’s in trouble.”
