THE WEIGHT OF AN OLIVE JAR / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - The Open DoorSix months later.

It was a bright Saturday morning in May. Sunlight poured through the wide windows of apartment 4C, illuminating the rich oak bookshelves that now lined the living room wall.

I stood in the kitchen, wearing a simple linen shirt and dark trousers, pouring fresh cold brew into two glasses.

The doorbell rang.

Clara walked out of the bedroom, wearing a soft summer dress, her dark hair falling loosely around her shoulders. She looked radiant, happy, and completely at peace.

She walked to the front door and pulled it open.

Marcus stood on the threshold, holding two brown paper bags from Kendall’s Fresh Market.

“Delivery for 4C!” Marcus announced with a wide grin. “One order of fresh fruit, cold brew, and exact brand olives!”

Clara laughed, taking the bags. “Thank you, Marcus.”

“Don't thank me,” Marcus chuckled, winking at me as I stepped up beside Clara and wrapped my arm gently around her waist. “Thank your new live-in carpenter. He checked the order twice.”

After Marcus left, Clara closed the door and turned in my arms, resting her hands against my chest. She looked up at me with those golden-specked eyes that had captured my heart three years ago.

“You know,” she murmured, leaning up on her tiptoes, “I’m really glad that jar of olives was missing that night.”

“Me too,” I smiled, leaning down to kiss her lips softly. “It was the best mistake I ever made.”
