Chapter 2 - Behind the Threshold“Jake,” Clara breathed, her fingers clutching the wooden doorframe. Her voice was barely a whisper, carrying a tremble that made my chest tighten.

“I brought the olives,” I said quietly, holding up the small brown bag. “They were left off the morning truck.”
She didn't look at the bag. She looked directly into my eyes, tears spilling over her dark lashes. “I don’t care about the olives, Jake. Please… step inside.”
For three years, the interior of 4C had been a mystery. Stepping across the threshold felt like entering another world. The apartment was warm, filled with books, soft ambient light, and the faint scent of jasmine. But on the mahogany coffee table lay a scattered pile of legal documents, a broken glass picture frame, and an open suitcase.
Clara closed the door behind me, leaning against it as if her knees could no longer support her weight.
“He was here,” she said, her voice shaking. “Daniel.”
I set the grocery bag down on the entryway table, keeping my distance to give her space. “Did he hurt you?”
“No,” she said quickly, shaking her head. “Not physically. But he took everything else. He’s been hiding funds from his firm, Jake. And because my name was on the joint lease and account from two years ago, he’s trying to frame me for the missing money.”
She pressed her palms to her face, a quiet sob tearing from her throat. “If I can’t find the original agreement by Monday morning, the investigators are going to freeze my assets and file charges.”

I stood there in my dark delivery jacket, looking at a woman who had been a quiet ray of light in my life for three years. The boundaries I had built around myself suddenly felt utterly meaningless.
“Where is the agreement?” I asked firmly.
