Chapter 5 - The Gala OffenseUpon their return to Boston, the annual Hastings Winter Charity Gala took place at the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel. It was the premier event of the winter social season, attended by five hundred business leaders, diplomats, and media reporters.

Milana arrived beside Edward, wearing a spectacular gold-and-white regal gown, her veil shimmering with subtle gold embroidery.
Edward kept his arm firmly around her waist, walking through the room with radiant pride. He introduced her to senators, foreign ambassadors, and tech executives, completely ignoring the curious glances from the crowd.
However, during cocktail hour, as Edward stepped away to speak with a major investor, an arrogant socialite named Julian Vanceâthe son of a rival private equity mogulâapproached Milana with a martini glass in hand.
Julian was notoriously obnoxious, accustomed to getting away with cruel behavior due to his familyâs wealth.
âMrs. Hastings,â Julian called out loudly, drawing the attention of nearby guests. âTell us, why the mystery? Is it a religious tradition, or are you simply giving poor Edward mercy by covering your face?â
Several guests chuckled nervously, while others looked uncomfortable.
Milana stood tall, her eyes fixed on Julian. âThe veil serves as a filter, Mr. Vance. It keeps out superficial nonsense.â
Julianâs face flushed red. Feeling humiliated, he took a step closer, raising his hand toward her face. âLetâs see what youâre hiding under there!â
Before Julianâs fingers could touch the fabric, a hand caught his wrist in an iron grip.
Edward shoved Julian back violently, sending his martini glass crashing onto the marble floor.
âTouch my wife again,â Edward growled, stepping between Julian and Milana, his body tense, his jaw clenched, âand I will break every finger on your hand.â
Julian stumbled backward, shocked by Edwardâs fierce protection. âEdward! It was just a joke!â
âGet out of this ballroom before security throws you into the street,â Edward ordered, his voice echoing across the quiet hall.
Julian fled through the double doors, leaving the room in stunned silence.
Edward turned back to Milana, holding her shoulders gently, checking if she was unhurt. âAre you okay?â
May you like
Milana looked up into his eyes, seeing the raw, unconditional love and fierce loyalty shining in his gaze. She touched his hand softly.
âI am perfectly okay, Edward,â she whispered. âBecause I know who is standing beside me.â
