Chapter 3 - A Mind Behind the MeshOver the next two months, Milana became an indispensable presence in Edward’s life, even as she maintained her veil.

While Edward spent his days battling his greedy uncle Richard in boardroom meetings, Milana worked quietly from the mansion’s study. She didn't spend her time shopping or attending mindless socialite tea parties. Instead, she analyzed market trends, reviewed pending infrastructure bills, and studied the weak points in Hastings Enterprises’ competitors.

One rainy Tuesday evening, Edward was sitting in his library surrounded by legal documents, his face buried in his hands, exhausted.

A three-billion-dollar solar infrastructure deal in East Africa—the flagship project of his tenure—was on the brink of collapse. The primary regulatory board in Kenya was threatening to deny the land permits due to environmental compliance disputes raised by a rival firm owned by his uncle’s associates.

A cup of hot black tea was placed gently on the desk beside his elbow.

Edward looked up. Milana stood beside him, wearing a comfortable midnight-blue silk robe, her sheer black veil draped softly over her shoulders.

“You’re stressing over the Nairobi permits,” Milana stated calmly.

Edward let out a weary laugh. “It’s a nightmare, Milana. If we lose the land permits by Friday, the board will hold a vote of no confidence against me.”

Milana pulled a leather notebook from her pocket and set it open on his desk.

“Your legal team is approaching the regulatory board using Western corporate litigation strategies, Edward,” Milana explained, pointing to a series of hand-drawn flowcharts and community trust frameworks. “In African infrastructure development, land rights are tied to regional community trusts, not central bureaucratic offices. If you reframe the contract to offer twenty percent equity directly to the local clean-water cooperative, the regional council will override the regulatory delay in twenty-four hours.”

Edward stared at the notebook, his mind racing as he analyzed her strategy. It was brilliant, legal, culturally precise, and entirely overlooked by his team of corporate lawyers.

He looked up into her brown eyes, seeing the sharp, brilliant mind shining behind the light mesh of her veil.

“How did you know this?” Edward asked, breathless.

“I spent five years managing rural electrification projects for my family’s foundation before I met you,” Milana smiled gently beneath her veil. “I know how my continent works, Edward. You just needed to ask.”

Edward reached across the desk, taking her warm, slender hand in his. “Thank you, Milana.”

For the first time since their marriage, Edward didn't think about her face at all. He saw the woman before him—and he was deeply, irrecoverably moved.
