Chapter 6 - Desperate MeasuresTwo weeks passed.

I immersed myself completely in my new role as Vice Chair at Harlow Industries. Working alongside my father, I led the successful restructuring of the Vance Global merger, earning the respect and admiration of the entire executive board.
Every evening, I returned to the penthouse to hold Lily in my arms. My father had built a custom nursery for her, complete with a handcrafted wooden crib engraved with delicate floral patterns—a stark contrast to the splintered wreckage Daniel had left on the lawn.
However, a desperate man with nothing left to lose is always dangerous.
One rainy afternoon, as I was exiting a charity gala at the Metropolitan Museum, a figure suddenly stepped out from behind a stone pillar, blocking my path to the waiting limousine.
It was Daniel.
He looked unrecognizable. His hair was unkempt, his eyes bloodshot, and his clothes looked unwashed. He looked like a shadow of the proud executive he had once been.
Marcus instantly stepped between us, his hand moving toward his jacket, but I gently raised a hand to stop him.
“Let him speak, Marcus,” I said calmly.
Daniel looked at me, his eyes wide with a terrifying mix of desperation and rage. “Claire... please. Look at what you’ve done to me. I’m sleeping in my car. I can barely afford food. Is this what you wanted? Complete destruction?”
“You destroyed yourself, Daniel,” I replied coolly. “You chose to steal from my family’s company. You chose to disrespect your wife and child.”
“I made a mistake!” he shouted, stepping forward, though Marcus kept him a firm arm’s length away. “I was under immense pressure! But you ruined my reputation! You destroyed my career!”
He pulled a thin Manila envelope from inside his coat and held it up threatingly.
“I have photos, Claire,” Daniel sneered, a desperate glimmer of arrogance returning to his voice. “Photos of you and your father meeting with private investors behind closed doors before the merger was announced. If I leak these to the financial press, it’ll spark an insider trading investigation! It will tank Harlow Industries’ stock by twenty percent!”
I stared at him, feeling a mixture of pity and contempt.
“Are you trying to blackmail me, Daniel?”
“I’m demanding fifty million dollars and a full retraction of the corporate fraud charges,” he demanded, his voice shaking with unstable desperation. “Wire the money to a new account by tomorrow morning, or I release the photos to every major news outlet in Manhattan!”

I took a slow breath, adjusting my umbrella against the rain.
“You really haven’t learned a single thing, have you?” I said softly.
