Chapter 3 - The Boardroom AmbushThe penthouse atop the Harlow Tower overlooked the entire glittering skyline of New York City. For the first twenty-four hours, I did nothing but rest, feed Lily, and feel the overwhelming relief of being safe. My father had brought in a team of top pediatricians, private nurses, and security detail to ensure Lily and I wanted for nothing.

But while I rested, my father’s legal and financial teams worked around the clock.

On Monday morning, Harlow Industries was scheduled to hold its annual executive board meeting. Daniel believed he was still going to present the multi-billion-dollar merger with Vance Global—a deal he thought would secure his position as the ultimate corporate successor.

He had no idea that his credentials had already been revoked.

At 8:45 AM, Daniel arrived at the corporate headquarters wearing his finest Italian suit, trying desperately to project confidence. Vanessa walked beside him, clutching a designer handbag, her face heavily covered in makeup to hide the stress of spending the weekend in a mid-tier hotel.

“Don't worry, Daniel,” Vanessa whispered as they entered the grand marble lobby. “Once you present the merger numbers today, the board won't care about a personal domestic dispute. Business is business. Old man Harlow can't remove you without board approval.”

Daniel swallowed hard, adjusting his tie. “Right. The board cares about profit, not my personal life.”

They stepped into the executive elevator and rode it to the top floor. The double mahogany doors of the main boardroom stood open. Inside, twelve of the most powerful board members and institutional investors sat around a polished walnut table.

At the head of the table sat Arthur Harlow.

Daniel took a deep breath, forcing a confident smile onto his face as he walked into the room. “Good morning, Chairman. Members of the board. I am prepared to deliver the final presentation for the Vance Global acquisition—”

“Sit down, Daniel,” Arthur said quietly.

Daniel blinked, glancing around the room. He noticed that every single board member was staring at him with looks of cold disapproval and disgust. On the large digital screen behind the Chairman, a slide was displayed, but it wasn't the merger presentation.

It was a detailed audit report titled: INTERNAL INVESTIGATION: DANIEL MILLER.

“What... what is this?” Daniel asked, his confidence fracturing.

“This is your career ending,” a voice spoke from the corner of the room.

The high-backed leather chair to the right of the Chairman rotated slowly.

I sat there, wearing a tailored navy silk suit, my hair styled in an elegant, commanding bun. A diamond brooch rested on my lapel, and a thick leather folder lay open in front of me.

Daniel stared at me in absolute shock. “Claire?! What are you doing here? This is an executive board meeting! You don't belong in this room!”

“Miss Harlow sits on this board as the Vice Chair of Harlow Industries,” Thomas Vance announced, standing up beside me. “She holds thirty-five percent of the voting shares through the Sterling Heritage Trust. She has more authority in this room than anyone except the Chairman himself.”

Vanessa staggered back against the wall, her face draining of color.

I looked directly into Daniel’s trembling eyes. “You told me I had no career, no income, and no leverage, Daniel. Let’s talk about your leverage now.”
