The Splintered Cradle / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail of TreasonI opened the leather folder on the table, my voice calm, precise, and ringing with absolute authority across the silent boardroom.

“Over the past six months, regional president Daniel Miller approved thirty-four unauthorized corporate expenditure reports,” I began, pressing a button on the remote control.

The digital screen behind Arthur shifted to reveal itemized receipts, bank transfers, and wire logs.

“Item one,” I continued. “A two-hundred-thousand-dollar luxury suite at the Ritz-Carlton, classified under ‘client hospitality.’ Item two: a fifty-thousand-dollar diamond ring purchased from Cartier, billed as a ‘corporate networking gift.’ Item three: multiple wire transfers totaling 1.2 million dollars sent to an offshore shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under the name Hale Enterprise Holdings.”

The room erupted into quiet gasps from the board members.

Vanessa gasped out loud, taking a violent step backward. “That’s... that’s a private business venture! It’s completely legal!”

“It is embezzlement, Miss Hale,” Thomas Vance corrected sternly. “And as an executive assistant who co-signed those transfer requests, you are legally classified as a co-conspirator to corporate theft.”

Daniel’s hands were shaking violently now. “Claire, please! I made mistakes, but I did it all for the company! I was securing deals! You can’t ruin my life over financial technicalities!”

“Technicalities?” I raised an eyebrow, picking up a small digital recorder from the table. “Let’s listen to your definition of corporate ethics, Daniel.”

I pressed play.

Daniel’s own voice echoed loudly through the high-end speakers of the boardroom:

“You’ve spent three years pretending to be some delicate housewife... You have no career, no income, and no leverage. Did you really think I’d stay trapped forever? You can sleep at a shelter for all I care.”

The board members shook their heads in utter disgust. One elderly investor slammed his pen onto the table. “Despicable. Utterly disgraceful.”

Daniel collapsed into an empty chair, burying his face in his hands. “Claire... please. Think of our marriage. Think of Lily.”

“I am thinking of Lily,” I said, my voice hardening like steel. “Which is why I am protecting her from a father who smashes her cradle and steals her future.”

Arthur Harlow stood up from the head of the table. His tall frame dominated the room.

“Effective immediately,” Arthur announced, his voice booming across the chamber, “Daniel Miller is terminated for cause. All stock options are voided. All corporate assets, including his company vehicle and credit cards, are seized. Corporate security will escort both Mr. Miller and Miss Hale off the premises.”

Two armed security guards entered the room instantly, grabbing Daniel by his arms and forcing him to his feet.

“Claire! Claire, please talk to me!” Daniel screamed as he was dragged backward toward the doors. “I love you! I was confused! Please give me another chance!”

I didn't even look up as security hauled him out of the boardroom, his desperate cries fading down the hallway.
