Chapter 9 - The Public ReckoningThree months had passed since the dramatic arrests at the gala.

The trial of The United States v. Adrian Cole was the most talked-about court case of the season. I sat in the front row of the gallery, my hand resting in my mother's, our posture perfect, our faces calm. Beside us sat Rosa, her maternity dress fitting snugly over her growing stomach, her face glowing with a quiet, beautiful strength.
The federal prosecutor presented the mountain of digital evidence, the under-the-table payroll ledgers, and the recorded conversations we had recovered from Adrian’s servers. Every single detail of his systematic exploitation was laid bare before the jury.
"The defendant used his power, his wealth, and his family's prestige to systematically exploit and silence the most vulnerable members of our workforce," the prosecutor said, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "He believed that because they were undocumented, they had no voices. He believed that because they had no money, they had no rights. But today, we prove him wrong."
The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
"We, the jury, find the defendant, Adrian Cole, guilty on all counts of federal tax evasion, human trafficking, and civil rights violations," the foreperson announced.

The judge slammed his heavy gavel down with a sharp, resounding crack. "Adrian Cole, you have shown a total lack of moral character and a terrifying capacity for exploitation. I sentence you to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary, with no possibility of parole."
As the bailiffs stepped forward to lead him away in chains, Adrian turned his head toward me, his eyes filled with a desperate, wild hatred. But I didn't flinch. I stood up, adjusted my jacket, and walked out of the courtroom beside Rosa, leaving the ruins of his empire behind forever.
