Chapter 6 - The Whistleblower’s ShieldThe next morning, the board of directors of Cole Enterprises held an emergency meeting on the top floor of their headquarters.

I sat in the secure waiting room of the federal courthouse, holding a warm cup of tea for Rosa, who was scheduled to give her formal deposition to the Department of Labor. She was wearing a simple, neat maternity dress, her hair pulled back, her face looking more rested and confident than I had ever seen it.

"Are you ready, Rosa?" I asked gently.

"I am ready, Ms. Evelyn," she said, her voice steady. "For so long, I was afraid to walk down the street because of his threats. But now, I know I have a voice. I want my baby to know that his mother fought for him."

"You are incredibly brave, Rosa," I said.

The door opened, and Detective Ramirez, the federal investigator assigned to the wage theft and coercion case, walked in. He had a thick folder in his hands, his face serious but satisfied.

"Ms. Evelyn, Ms. Rosa," the detective said, sitting down across from us. "We’ve just completed the raid on Cole Enterprises' payroll servers. We found the digital transactions. Adrian Cole didn't just pay Rosa through a shell account; he’s been doing the same to twelve other domestic workers employed at his family's private estates."

"Twelve others?" I gasped.

"It’s a systematic pattern of tax evasion, human trafficking, and coercion," Ramirez nodded. "We’ve also recovered deleted emails from Adrian’s personal account where he discusses 'threatening the domestic staff with immigration checks' if they complained about working eighty-hour weeks without overtime."

"This is grand larceny and federal civil rights violations," I said, my legal mind instantly calculating the severity of the charges.

"It is," Ramirez smiled. "And because of the federal nature of the offenses, Adrian’s family cannot shut this down. The Department of Justice has just authorized a formal arrest warrant for Adrian Cole. He’s being taken into custody as we speak."

I looked at Rosa, and a bright, beautiful smile broke across her face. The man who had stood above her in his tailored suit, treating her like an insignificant speck of dust, was about to be led away in steel handcuffs.
