Chapter 7 - A Dinner Party of DisgraceThe Cole family’s prestigious reputation in high society was a fragile, glass castle, and it was about to shatter into a million pieces.

On Saturday evening, Adrian’s mother, Celeste, held her annual charity gala at the Metropolitan Club. It was the premier event of the season, a gathering of the city’s wealthiest and most influential families. Celeste had spent months organizing the gala, desperate to project an image of absolute control and prestige despite the quiet rumors of the corporate audit.
I stood in the grand entrance of the ballroom, wearing a stunning, simple emerald gown, my posture perfect, my face serene. I was no longer wearing his ring, but I was wearing the confidence of a woman who knew the truth.
"Evelyn, darling!" Celeste gasped, rushing toward me, her diamond necklace clattering against her silk dress. Her smile was tight, her eyes filled with a desperate, suppressed panic. "Thank goodness you're here. We must talk. You have to stop this madness. Adrian has been suspended from the company, and the board is in chaos! Speak to your father. Tell him to release the funding!"
"The funding is gone, Celeste," I said, my voice carrying easily over the soft classical music playing in the background. "My father pulled his investments from Cole Enterprises yesterday morning."
Celeste’s face turned an ugly, pale shade of gray. "How could you do this to us? We are family! We were going to build an empire together!"
"You built your empire on the exploitation of women like Rosa, Celeste," I said, looking down at her with an expression of pure, unyielding ice. "And now, the foundation has rotted."
At that exact moment, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open, and four federal marshals walked in. The chatter in the ballroom died down instantly, the guests turning to watch the sudden intrusion of law enforcement.
They marched straight past the stunned guests, stopping directly in front of Adrian, who was standing near the ice sculpture, a glass of champagne in his hand.
"Adrian Cole?" the lead marshal announced, his voice echoing through the silent ballroom. "You are under arrest for federal tax evasion, human trafficking, and civil rights violations. Hands behind your back."

The champagne glass slipped from Adrian’s trembling fingers, shattering loudly on the polished marble floor. The high-society crowd gasped, several women letting out sharp screams of shock, as the cold steel handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists.
Celeste let out a high-pitched, hysterical sob, collapsing into the arms of her husband as Adrian was led out of the ballroom in chains, in front of the very people he had spent his entire life trying to impress.
