Chapter 5 - Family Ties and Frayed NervesThe confrontation came sooner than I expected.

That evening, I returned to my apartment to find Adrian waiting for me in the lobby. He was no longer wearing his polished tailored suit; his hair was slightly disheveled, his tie loosened, and his eyes held a desperate, manic energy.

"Evelyn!" he called out, stepping into my path as I walked toward the elevators. "Finally. You have to listen to me."

"We have nothing to say to each other, Adrian," I said, keeping my distance. "I’ve already had my lawyers file the paperwork to return your ring."

"I don't care about the ring!" he hissed, his voice rising, drawing the attention of the lobby receptionist. "The corporate auditors arrived at my office three hours ago. They are freezing my access to the company servers. They say they are investigating 'compliance irregularities' linked to my accounts. What did you do, Evelyn?"

"I balanced the ledger, Adrian," I said calmly, looking dead into his eyes. "I gave the video to the ethics certification committee. And I gave Rosa’s payroll records to the Department of Labor."

Adrian stepped closer, his jaw clenching, his breathing shallow. "You're ruining my life over a maid! She’s a nobody, Evelyn! She was a temporary employee! I was going to pay her off! I gave her ten thousand dollars!"

"You threw money at her while threatening to tear her away from her child," I said, my voice dropping into a dangerous, flat register. "You thought she had no one to protect her. You thought she was invisible. But she isn't. And neither are your crimes."

"You think you're so smart, don't you?" Adrian sneered, his hands clenching into fists at his sides. "My father is the primary shareholder of that firm. He’ll have this investigation shut down by tomorrow morning. Your little nonprofit won't survive the legal battle my family is going to bring to your door."

"Let them try," I said, stepping into the opening elevator. "My former law partner is heading the federal audit, Adrian. Your father can't buy his way out of this one. You should start looking for a criminal defense attorney. You're going to need one."

The elevator doors slid shut, cutting off his angry, desperate shouting. For the first time in years, I felt a profound, beautiful sense of peace. I was finally free of him, and the reckoning had officially begun.
